Should I replace my P95f+b for the VX922?

Computer Desk here

I play games mostly and have own this Viewsonic P95f+ black for 3 or 4 years now. This is one of the best gaming CRT ever created. I play nowadays Oblivion, Warhammer 40,000 DOW/WA, Half-Life 2, The Movies, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, etc.

My question is, apart from gaining one diagonal inch of screen, which is not lot, will I see a difference in image quality? Images are crispier on a LCD or CRT? And as you can see, the desk space is not really an issue, but some more space is not something to put aside.

I went shopping yesterday and saw the VX922 for 500CAD but I haven't been able to try it since there was no demos or games installed. I played around in Windows there but nothing more. The panel is nice, colors were nice too. I put a relatively quick screen saver on and could see no ghosting (not the best of tests).

So is it worth replacing a great CRT with what looks like a great LCD panel like the VX922 or should I look for a 20" instead?

If that CRT is really great, keep it. The VX922 has backlight bleeding and it ghosts a bit, not as much as the VX715. The only good things of LCDs are reduced power consumption and flat panel.

I was stuck on CRTs during the previous four years because of skepticism towards upgrading to LCDs. A few times in that span of time, after reading tons of reviews and learning, learning, learning ... I would almost come close to pulling the trigger to acquire an LCD. Caution kept me back.

Well, when TomsHardwareGuide recently reviewed the VX922 and claimed that they would from then on be using the VX922 as the compare-all-against monitor for gaming, I decided to sink US$359 into the VX922.

And boy, do I ever appreciate the fact that I did. This LCD is amazing, it's so clear and the colors so vibrant. It's like looking out of a clean, superb window when playing games such as Oblivion. I have not detected any ghosting anywhere.

My only regret is that the price was lowered US$30 within a week after I purchased LOL.

Read this:

I would wait. LCD is not perfect for everyone, there are numerous issues where LCD's work to try to catch up with CRT.

I recently purchase the 24" dell 2405 LCD. I disliked it so much I sold it.

Reason: Very poor viewing angles(move your head 2" and view changes). Excessive screen brightness. Input lag.

I had eye fatique all the time using this monitor. Sometimes sharper and brighter is not always better.

Basicially what is the rush? Each generation gets better and cheaper. Since you have a CRT you really like, why not wait till your CRT starts giving you grief.

My CRT was dying and that is what prompted my move. Even then I am back to using my dying CRT while I consider getting a IPS based LCD (better viewing angle) or a new CRT.

Replaced and loving it!

At first I was very sceptical. I didn't loved what I was seeing and after some tweaking and testing, I really love this VX922.

Well, i'm quite surprised with the general image quality and sharpness. But first you have to get used to it. At first I was very disappointed with what I saw. Too much brightness et color accuracy is so so.

After much settings and tweaking, I got an image that I like but there's still this brightness that I can't seem to lower without sacrificing some quality and the black, you really have to get used to it since a LCD does not render black, it's just "shutting" the pixels so they don't render a color.

Overall, it's a really good LCD panel. The crispness and sharpness of details is stunning.

One negative point to this LCD is that it has difficulties rendering an accurate BLUE. The blues have a little too much green in them even if I set the color of the monitor to 6500k (which add red for warmer colors).

I'd say, for now I give the VX922 a 8/10.

EDIT: One more thing, the viewing angle are not that good. Move a bit to left, right, up or down and your done. I should have checked this before buying, but that's not that a big deal since it's not for watching movies.

Viewing angles were a big part of the reason I ditched my 24" LCD. A wider screen makes it much worse.

I won't consider another LCD unless it has an IPS screen which is the best of LCD for viewing angle.

Never had an issue watching Video as I sat further back for that.
