should I refund this guy his money?

Sold a G1 over on xda. The screen was in mint condition, flawless practically. Guy got the phone and said it's not the condition he thought. Said there was a small mark(nothing crazy) on the screen. He was bitching saying he wasn't satisfied. The phone itself was in decent condition.

I offered a refund and he said this:

Yeah I've been running into some money troubles as well. The reason I was looking for a phone was because my sister lost her phone and needed a phone. She bought a replacement for herself and I have an extra phone.

I'm a student and I've just run to money troubles (damn pigs and their traffic tickets, which will cost me a cool ~$500)

Judging by that reply he's wanting money back because of his financial woes and not because of the unsatisfied shape he thinks the phone is in. Should I tell him to count bricks and ah heck off or what?

Depends on how cool you want to be. Imo, you're under no obligation to give a refund, but if you want to be cool, you could take the phone back with a small surcharge, and resell it.

This, charge a "restocking fee" to cover the time of yours the buyer is wasting.

Or the guy could be trying a swap out with a crapped out phone he plans to send back to you. Just never know about people.

I would not give a full refund or any refund. Advertising, packing, shipping etc., takes time and effort. If you give a full refund, you've just wasted time and money. There is also absolutely no guarantee that the item is still in the same condition as when it left your hands.

Like others have said, I don't think there is any obligation on your part. As far as I know, online sales via forums are "as-is, no refunds," and I try to explicitly state this if someone fails to notice the implication.

Unless you explicitly stated at any point you would accept returns, I would say screw you to the guy. I also don't understand why he's giving you so much personal information.

As a private seller of used items, you can't afford a "30 day money back guarantee." What does he think this is, Sears?

Give him back $20 for decreased "value".

i offered him $25 to keep the phone so i could just be done with the deal. hate to break it to the guy as he seemed nice(spoke on the phone with him) but i'm not refunding him because of financial problems. if he would have stated it was because of the phone itself then i could see a refund in order.

thanks.

When ever an eBayer messages me with something about money problems, I will almost always give them their money back.

Tell him it isn't a problem (really it shouldn't be) to return it for a refund, but he has to pay the shipping, pay the fees back for eBay and PayPal (if any), and make sure you have the phone back before issuing the refund.

If he isn't comfortable with this, then tell him to have fun dealing with eBay/PayPal disputes for the next eight months because frankly, he doesn't have a case.

Did you claim the screen was "mint" or "flawless" in your ad when it really wasn't? I hate when people do that. If it's not perfect then don't use those words, just say excellent condition.

This is a forum sale, not eBay.

If you're feeling nice, he pays shipping (Insured) for the return, and you'll refund as soon as you receive it to verified it hasn't been tampered with and is still in full working order.

Accept nothing less.
