Should I put a fan here?

Hi all,

I'm wondering if it would be a good idea if I replace the black plastic tube (I don't know what its called) from the side panel and replace it with a 80mm fan?

This is a picture of what I'm talking about

Should I just remove that black circular vent thing and replace it with a fan? Or should I just keep it like that?

Let's say a fan is good, do you think an 80mm fan will fit in there?

Btw, I already have two 120mm fans installed in the case.

Probably more of a pain than it's worth. The 120's will pull more than enough air through that hole as is. To make a significant difference with an 80 is going to make some noise.

Pull the duct off and see what's there. You might be able to sandwich a fan in there if the CPU really needs more cooling. I'd probably pull the duct off and block both grills on the side panel if the items that are supposed to be cooled by those don't really need it.

I also thought of "sandwiching" an 80mm fan and still use the air duct. I'm just worried if:

1) There would be enough clearance between the duct and the HFS (BTW, its stock). I don't have a 80mm fan right now so I can't test.

*Using my imagination, if there would be clearance .. it would probably be 3-5mm only! very small clearance. Is that good?

2) If the screws from the air duct holes will fit the 80mm holes (or should I just glue it or something)

3) Will this be more efficient? Since there would be two fans blowing out in a straight line (ideally), would they conflict in any sort of way?

Noise is not a problem to me. Humming computer fans put me to sleep .. lol (seriously though)

I'm just wondering if this will actually help in ventilating my PC. I heard from some posts that too much fan doesn't help and sometimes cause more problems .. I don't know if that is true.

I live in a tropical country and damn, its hot here! Ranges from 80-100F

Anybody tried putting a fan in between the air duct and the cover plate (sandwich)?

Should I just trash this thought?

Antec SLK3000B?

I pulled off the duct, popped in an 80mm Panaflo L1A, dialled the voltage down to inaudible but spinning. No difference in any temeperature whether used as an intake or exhaust.

I'm not using an Antec case. I'm just using a cheap coolermaster case. I guess I won't bother putting a fan there. Thanks again!

I can tell you that I put a 90mm fan on my old antec case (don't remember the model, but it was bout 6 years ago), and I found it to be quite annoying. Everytime I wanted to take the side cover off I had to disconnect the fan, or let it hang there still connected. I eventually just disconnected it and never plugged it back in, because I go into my computer too often.

edit: I am assuming that you are asking about putting a fan on the side cover, but I can't tell because I can't open that picture from work.

Yup, I realized that annoying thing too. My old computer had that, and sometimes I forget that there is a cable attached and when I remove the sidepanel with force then I hear the cable snap . and I say oooppsss ... Its a good thing it doesnt break or something

I guess I'll make an observation and see (temp difference). I'll just buy this 90mm or 80mm fan and test. If it doesn't work, ill just keep that 80/90mm fan for backup or future use

my case looks just like that in the OP's picture. I put a 80 in the top vent with the round tube coming off that, and a 120mm in the vent at the bottom. it dropped my gpu idle temp by 10, but the cpu only went down like 1-2 degrees

So did it fit, the 80mm?? Did you slice the air duct or something? When I'm looking at mine, I think the air duct will hit the CPU fan .. I'm thinking of cutting it a little.

With the 120mm .. how did you put it there? there are no screw holes right? Did you glue it or modded it to have screw holes?

i screwed it from the ouside, with the fan on the inside, and the screws went into the holes of the plastic fan casing, i had the fan oriented diamond shaped from top to bottom, so that the screws would fit, i only used 2 screws.
