Should I purchase a Macbook?

I'm in the need of a nice, sleek, mobile laptop for school work, internet, basic multimedia, that I plan on carrying EVERYWHERE I go around campus. I have never owned any apple products other than the iPod and I've been using Windows my entire life but I wouldn't mind learning a new OS. Personally, I'm drawn towards the design of the Macbook and the price with the educational discount puts it right at $1000 for the basic model, which more than enough for my purposes. So once Leopard is released, should I give Macbook a try? The only thing about it that is an issue is that there are lighter and smaller notebooks out there and the release of the Eee PC is coming soon. Should I go ahead and take the plunge with a new Macbook?

I would hold off a bit longer, word on the street is that apple may soon introduce a smaller version of the macbook or macbook pro.

Yeah there have been a lot of rumors lately about a smaller MacBook. At the very least, I would definitely wait for Leopard. If Apple really has an improved MacBook up its sleeves, we might not see it until the January event. There's not much more room to go with the C2D chips; the fastest MacBook is at 2.16ghz and the fasted C2D Merom is 2.33ghz, so they're only one step away from maxing out that platform. I would imagine the next jump would be the Santa Rosa platform along with an LED screen, both of which would allow for a thinner, cooler-running laptop design.

I'd definitely recommend the MacBook. I love my 13" screen, 4-5 hr battery life and easy mobility. Let Leopard roll out, then pounce!

what i really want is a macbook w/ a freakin decent video card. it's the only thing that kept me from buying one and going with an iMac instead. didn't need the portability, but it would have been nice.

if they made a macbook pro 13.3" for $1500, i'd be all over it. For the price premium of the black macbook, I think it should have something other than paint.

I don't think that they will make one for that cheap, I think they want a decent price gap between the MacBook and the Pro. I could see them releasing a 13" MBP at the old 12 PowerBook price point though, which was 1599 or more if I remember right.

I know, it's wishful thinking. heh. But at least that's in the right step, I can still qualify for educational discounts :)

just seems to be what you were looking for. the power of your imac in a portable package. the macbook will probably never have a dedicated graphics card, that's not the market it's targeted at. i do miss my 12" g4 powerbook tho.

The 12" PowerBook was a nice little guy, shame it wasn't widescreen.

That really is a nice machine - my old girlfriend has one and I like it. To me, though, the 13.3" Macbook is just about the perfect form factor. In an ideal world, it could stand to be smaller and lighter (though it is already pretty small and light), but I think a 13.3" screen is just perfect for all-around use. I briefly owned a 15.4" Thinkpad T61, and the thing seemed just gi-normous.
