I currently have a Socket 754 3200+, Epox Motherboard, and a noname 420w psu, with a 6600GT.

I'm looking at using a 37" LCD television as my monitor, so I want a more powerful system to push some games to the limits and look great on my TV. I am getting the SLI motherboard so that eventually I can go with the SLI setup, and enjoy a more powerful system.

*edit*

The order comes with

I should mention I'm in Canada and plan on making my orders from NCIX.com

I am personally a big fan of the BFGs, but I will look into the XFX.

That is the LCD television I am looking at now.

Theres a post regarding LCD Televisons I created in the video section. This television looks to be a good choice, especially with the reviews over at amazon.com

The product specs state that it can excellently convert to a high grade computer monitor alternative.

Ok, and everything else looks good? I won't have any compatability problems or anything? It'll run most games today at high settings at the resolution of that TV?

That TV Doesn't have all that high a resolution. ~1300x768. on a 37" panel those pixels are going to lok freaking huge if you are close to it at all. A sinlge 7800GT should play all your games with room to spare on that res. (It is a very unussual resolution however so you may have to mod your game config files to support it. If you're going to blow that kinda money, consider getting dual Dell 2405FPW's instead. and a TV tuner card ;)

I'm going to be a good 7 or 8 feet away from it. I understand that I'll have to edit the config files to run at my particular setting. The Dell LCD television also had that resolution. A lot of LCD tv's seem to have that resolution.

1366 x 768 is actually higher than 1280x768, which is a decent resolution for that far away. Though I do understand where you are coming from.

why don't you play on your computer at 2 feet away like a normal person? if you're spending all that, why not get a 7800gtx? that way if you sli later, your gtx sli setup will own the 7800gt setup that you would've had instead

But I bet it'll look like crap period. Try to get a 1080 LCD monitor, otherwise the SLI upgrade is absolutely worthless because the games are going to be so CPU bound with a monitor like that.

Get a Opteron 165 dual core it has the same cache but is only 200MHz lower than the X2, also the 4400+ is almost $663 when the Opteron is only $366

The reason I want to do this is to create something a little different. I think it could be fun to play games on the big screen all the time. I'd like to create the same atmosphere some consolers do, but with the high quality games on the PC.

This is where the LCD Television as a monitor upgrade discussion has been taking place.

Could you possibly give me some examples of good televisions? I have been looking and discussing in the video forum. What about this?
http://mdg.ca/en/products/tv_lcd37.asp
The people in the video forum mentionned something about pixil mapping and how that resolution actually will be smaller along the lines of 1366x768.
How is it so CPU bound? I don't quite understand that. A game like X3 for instance right now, at 1024x768 with everything maxed gives me about 12fps with the hud and 23 fps without the hud. Games this intensive could benefit from a big upgrade and some more games like this are foreseeable.

But isn't it a server CPU? I mean looking at that, it doesn't seem like it would reap the the rewards in gaming.

Is also a choice I have instead of going with the MDG one if you guys think its any good.

<edit>

Nevermind, looking at advanced specs for it I found this
Resolution 1920 x 1080 (Panel Native Resolution)
PC (16:9) Max. Resolution: 1366x768

I've been looking into this whole opteron thing now, and though its a cheaper processor with better overclocking potential, its a server based CPU. The Dual Core X2, the 4400+ for instance that I plan on getting seems to be a much better choice for gaming. I can't seem to find any comparisons between the processors.

Getting the opteron seems like a risk, dependant on the processor you get, the speeds might not OC as high as one would expect. The Athlonx2 seems like an overall better choice..

As for the monitor. I was doing the calculations of pixels on the screen and how nice the image will look on the olevia screen and I came across articles suggesting I'd be able to switch the output from the computer to the 1080i or the 720p setting. Now, if this is the case, and I were to choose 1080i, would the response time factor in at all? As far as I understand, the 30fps that the 1080i would achieve could lead to ghosting or lagged images, but would the response time of only 8ms not compensate for this?

1366x768 is a decent resolution. It is 300k pixels short of 1280x1024 and over 300k above 1024x768 (If I'm doing the calculations right).

Opteron was a big hit when it started coming in a socket 939 flavor. At first, the single core (CABNE stepping) was hitting amazing speeds on air cooling. However, the dual core opterons are overclocking to about the same speeds as the equivalent X2 processors. While the lower end opterons offer 2x1MB cache, the Manchester X2's (with the exception of the Toledo 3800) offer only 2x512MB cache. In your case, both chips offer 2x1MB cache, so I'd let price be your guide.

There is a chance we'll start seeing better things from the opteron dual cores when more people get thier hands on them, but I'd buy what you find cheaper.

Yea, I'd like to save money where I can, everyone does. But my basic question is will the 165 reach the performence of the 4400+ while overclocking. I mean, the reason I want the 4400+ is that I understand it performs amazing in games at stock speeds. I mean, overclocking isnt a requirement for me. I want something thats going to run well regardless.

Yes, with the 165 on air cooling you will be able to reach 2.6GHz easily. The Opterons are vigrously tested and everyhting that doesn't pass is thrown into the X2 pile. With the extra 1MB x 2 Cache and if you overclock it to 26, this thing will be amazing, and its only $366 :)
