Should I, or shouldn't I?

In another post I mentioned I got the ILOVEYOU virus. It slipped through my ISP which I had set up only to deliver 3 trusted e-mails to my Outlook Express. Nothing ever came through other than these trusted e-mail people. The virus was not forwarded to me by these people.

My concern is that I did not find all the files. I tested online virus scanners and used my AVG antivirus and all tells me this virus is gone. Yet, I found infected files that were not detected. I've been reading everything online on how to eradicate this virus completely and followed each, as well as how to secure, as much as possible, my online time. This is my first infection in 8 years.

Should I do a complete reformat of my hardrive and then do a reinstall of my XPpro to ensure that this virus is completely gone? And if so, where can I find detailed information on how to do this? I must have a secure environment due and no infected files due to the fact that I do a lot of money transactions online.

thank you for any suggestions.

if you aren't afraid of losing your files (or you can back up the important non-infected ones) then I say go for it. Have you tried microsoft's knowlege base? I will try to find you a link. You should also be aware that you will need drivers for all of your devices on hand to reinstall them, especially the ones that you will use to connect to the internet. (nic, modem, whatever)

/edit is your xp an upgrade or a stand alone product?

It's an OEM XPpro. Only one OS on my PC. It's set to NTFS (one partition) only. This infection looks as though it's change several XML files. No, I haven't looked at MSFT knowledge base. I can't imagine why. I instead did a search with Google.

I believe most of my drivers are on the XP installed disc. I have my printer driver.

most third party devices will not have drivers included on the xp disk (to my knowlege) however you can download them from the mfr website, was this a rig your built yourself, or one you purchased? do you know all of the components in there?

Well, if you want to be sure, I would reformat and reinstall. I make it a point these days to keep track of all the software on my machines and have it ready for a rebuild at any time.

I tell everyone I know who gets a virus to format and reinstall. I have a server that got the Nimbda virus way back when. I ran 2 different virus checkers and applied all MS patches. I also locked down all the webservices with all of MSs lockdown tools. For the next few months I diligently applied MS patches and virus checked once a week. Well last week I ran virus checker and it came up with 2 new files a rootkit and a remote client. Needless to say I finally listened to my own advice, and reformatted. I'm currently installing linux.

Edit: Actually I would say the XP disk will have at least basic support for most third party devices. That will at least get you up and running. Then you can determine what other drivers you may need to increase functionality of third party devices.
