Should I or Should I Not...??

I live in Jamaica and I can get my 8800GTS 320MB sold for the equivalent of US$200.

I'm waiting for the GeForce 9800GTX or 9800GX2 (whichever is more attractive at release time)...but...

Should I buy an 8800GT 512MB to tide me over until then?

The eVGA SuperClocked is at $270 - $200 = $70 upgrade....

Thoughts, comments, suggestions....??

I'd wait for the newer cards that are supposed to be coming out soon, unless you won't be able much for your current card then.

You shouldn't be hurting much performance wise with what you currently have.

I'd wait, it's not like you'll be struggling with anything (except Crysis but that game looks better than anything else out there even at medium-high) and the 8800GT won't be a significant enough upgrade to warrant a 70$ upgrade...

Well thanks. I was just thinking about it because we are not sure about the dates of the next high-end release from Nvidia.

Here's a good question. Did you buy your eVGA 8800GTS 320MB retail or off someone? If you got it retail, and dep what resolution you game at, there are big reasons to keep it. If you got it off someone (ie no warranty) and you game at 1680x1050 or higher, then upgrading to the 8800GT(S) 512MB makes sense. Not only do you buy a lifetime warranty, but you also get the CHANCE at a step up.

I bought my card from Newegg.

I did check out the step up and it doesn't seem to apply to me, here in Jamaica. So...

Situation is, I'm saving to buy a 24" monitor to game at 1920x1200 but I don't want any good upgrade deals to pass me by.

For a $70 upgrade, you can't go wrong. But if you won't have that 1920res monitor for a while, you probably don't quite need the extra memory and performance. Still, I'd go for it. When the 9800's come out, you probably won't get $200 for the GTS 320.

This was my line of thinking.

If I trade up now, then I could still get like $280 for my GT (used).

I'm just thinking of preserving monetary value and getting what I can for my stuff before their value decreases.

Agree?

If that's your philosophy - I'd say go for it!

Don't expect any huge performance improvements though...

No I'm not expecting anything big. Just maybe a few frames and a bit smoother dues to the extra memory.

I wouldn't expect $280 for a used 8800GT. You said yourself you're buying it for $270. When the 9000-series cards come out, that price isn't going anywhere but down.

In Jamaica, the prices for tech stuff are marked up higher than in the USA.

Also, the high-end stuff aren't really as widely available either. So, that is why I can get good money for my used stuff.

Fine, even at $250 for the GT, when GF9 is released and I'll end up losing only $20....which is less than what the price of my GTS 320MB would fall by.

I have a GTS 320 also and was wondering about upgrading. Even some games that aren't Crysis I can't run on all high settings (well, not unless I want stuttering).

I won't be upgrading to the newest stuff though since I really don't want to spend more $300 if I can help it.

AMD Opteron 175 @ 2.2Ghz
2 GB RAM
EVGA 8800GTS 320
I game at 1680x1050

Hmmm, for 50$ I would probably stepup my own 8800gts 320mb to a 8800GT 512mb. It's faster in general, and has a tad more vram, that I'm currently lacking at my native res of 1680*1050. But more then that, prolly better to wait for when you need a whole new card.

Well if you're comfortable about this then I'd say upgrade and enjoy the immediate benefit of the newer card.

I would just upgrade to the 8800gt and stop waiting for something that may or may not be good.

Good point.

Also, the stock eVGA 8800GT is back in stock :p at Newegg for $250.
That makes it a $50 upgrade....Now isn't that worth it.
I think so...but I'm not 100% sure...

It's not something I'd do unless there's a game right now that you want to play but you feel unable to AND you know the 8800GT would allow you to play that game.

That said, I upgrade less often than most people.
