Best CPU out there for desktop users right now = $1300 Core i7 EE 965 3.2 GHz

My Q9550 @ 3.95 GHz is far faster than that i7 965 @ 3.2 GHz for everything i do, & my CPU, RAM, mobo, cooler & fan, & who knows what else cost less than that.

Nothing insignificant about that at all.

Now yes, i realize you can OC that i7 to blow away my C2Q, but fact is, i look at it as me getting better than $1300 performance for a hell of a lot less :D

Or take my Celeron E1200 @ 3.2 GHz. That cost me $55. It would have cost me over triple that to get the same performance at stock from another CPU...

Well, my Core i7 920 costs about the same as your Q9550 and it will dominate it.

Alright then. I guess I'll wait it out and save up until Phenom IIs hit the market. Not sure how much I'll actually get to use it though, since I graduate from high school this year, and so I'll probably get a laptop. My brother tells me that having a desktop in college isn't practical, and that I'd probably prefer the laptop over the desktop...

I don't think I agree, since I like games...

I personally can't stand laptop's for at home use. Why don't you get a $300 laptop during Black Friday or Christmas and build your desktop? That way you could have both.

Ideally, I wouldn't be home very often at all, since my top picks for schools are on the east and west coasts, and I live in the suburbs of Chicago. I'd only be home during breaks.

I know I'll be getting a laptop regardless of what I do with my desktop, but it's just a question of whether I should bother. I probably will though, since I think I'll take a desktop to college with me if I buy an LCD monitor as well.

Can anyone living in a dorm say whether having a desktop with an lcd monitor in college is practical, or a big no-no?
