My good friend has offered me a deal if i switch to macs for a time period. Here is the deal:

-He gets my 1 & only computer, my gaming box and takes it to his house for 3 months
-He buys me a refurbed PPC mini mac to use in the mean-time
-I must learn Ruby on Rails programming langauge, He of course helps w/ everything
-I build a real estate website for him to prove my programming skills (he said it would take about 40 hours)... I can stretch it over the 3 months
-If i succesfully complete training i get 1k in a check + my old computer + I get to keep the mac!

Now, this is a hard decision. Summer is right around the corner and w/o a gaming PC i'll miss a lot of time w/ my friends playing video games. And of course, i've put my blood, sweat and tears into the rig, it will be letting a part of me go :(

Its too bad I don't know squat about programming... I used to know a bit of HTML but that was way back...

But, a new computer & 1k is pretty sweet too. He points out that the mac & 1k are worthless, the real prize is in learning ruby on rails. If i get good enough I can start working for him on projects making 30-35 an hour.

Anyone have any suggestions? Do you think this is fair? My main concern is my lack of programming skills. Can a person really plunge head first into ruby on rails and learn?

he says he bills clients 2k a week with a PCC so i dont' need a mactel. I just think he doesn't want me to have a better one lol. My mom has a core solo mini and I can't tell the diff between hers and his.... then again i've never stresed them too much either.

I might ask to give him the diff in money to make up for a core solo w/ 1gb ]

Edit:
He knows if i have a windows computer I wont' touch the mac. Example: i have Ubuntu dual boot on my computer. How many times have I booted up linux? very few times..

EDITED for clarity

Couple things.

First, the PPC takes ~65 secs to boot, whereas the Intel Mini takes ~25, IIRC. That's just an example; the Intel Minis are MUCH faster than the PPC Mini overall, Google it.

Also, I saw benchmarks on the Core Duo that showed almost no difference whatsoever between 512mb and 1gb, but I'm not sure about the Core Solo. I generally run Adium, iTunes, Colloquy, Synergy, and Firefox with 8 or so tabs and it's fast enough with no issue of too little RAM.

:)

also, does anyone have experience with Ruby On Rails? I need to know how "hard" it is. My friend is obsessed with it. He used to do linux & various programming. Now his 110% macs & RoR. He is convinced its the future. He bills at 65$ an hour, which he says is somewhat cheap. Currently he is working for people across the county he has never met and they pay him thousands of dollars for RoR work. He is so busy with RoR work he has to turn lots of it down, this why he says there is lots of oppurtunity.

Nope but I want to know more about it. I've heard only good things about Ruby. :)

No, once you contaminate yourself by the mac, I vote for banishment from ATOT, unless you run Linux on it.

Don't do it. I was stuck using a mac for the past week and I was about to go crazy. Thank god I'm back on my PC.

Get an Intel Mini and I'd do it. Heck, take the PPC Mini and leave it in a closet and buy an Intel Mini and use that. That way you at least have a chance to run Windows if you need to.

then he wouldn't be really earning any money  Maybe he should take the mac mini, put it in the closet, build another PC for cheap and or obtain it for cheap, use that, work on ROR wait three months, voila, you got the best of all worlds.
