SLI GT's are not a waste. I had a GTX512 on pre-order, so I think I can afford 2xGT's.
They are not a waste if you like turing up the eye candy :) , especally in FEAR!!!!

It depends on how you want to procede. For current games, there's no need to have two 7800 GTs at 1280x1024 (FEAR and CoD2 being possible exceptions). For future games however, you can definitely use all that GPU power (Oblivion and Unreal Engine 3 come to mind). Assuming you have these future games in mind, you have three choices: 1) buy two GTs now and hang on to them for a few years, 2) buy one GT now and another later on, 3) get a GT now, then upgrade again to R580/G71 when those come out.

Personally, I would go with option 2 or 3.

How about another option, buy 2 GT's now, and then get G71/G80 when it comes out and sell GT's.

At 1280x1024, you'll be able to run everything at high w/ full eye candy w/ a single GTX. With a GT overclocked, you may get the same results. GT SLI is overkill at that resolution. Personally, I'd get a eVGA 7800GT CO for $320 and use the rest of the money to get a monitor that can do 1600x1200.

I already have a monitor, it's a Viewsonic VP930B, a very nice monitor that has 1280x1024 max and is the native res.
If it's overkill for this generation of games, then it should be just right for the next generation. I'm trying to future proof here. (even though I probably will be getting the G71/G80.

I have made up my mind at this one and am getting the GT's to SLI. That gives me an extra $150 to do w/e I want with.
Any suggestions?

SLI for 1280x1024? wow talk about over kill. A single 256GTX would work or a X1800XT should last quite awhile...

For the next generation of games, you'll want a dual-core cpu and a video card w/ 512mb of ram. I thought about going w/ 2 7800GTs SLI but didn't want to deal w/ upgrading my psu and extra problems that SLI can create.

Alright, another question for you. Is the 7800GTX really worth the money over the GT (In SLI too)? I mean performance and money wise. I have $750 right now to spend. So I coulde ge 2xGT's. But only 1 GTX and maby another later. (Note I say MABY!!).
Personally I don't think it's worth the extra $150 (or $300 more for SLI) for the GTX. So do you agree?

i think capt has answered your question pretty well.

whats your cpu anyway? ram? psu?

i'd be more apt to buy a single gt now and either save the $$ for the next gen or upgrade other components.

if you truly want to max/max every game, then you should just get the gts sli'd.

i think i'd buy the 18000xt over the gtx at this time. but then again, i wouldn't be spending alot of $$ right now with the next cards coming in ~ 2 months.

CPU: Opty 175
RAM: OCZ DDR500 Plat. (Inferion)
PSU: Seasonic S12-600W
Mobo: A8N32-SLI Deluxe

I think I will go for the GT's SLI'd. I realize it's a bit of overkill. But I like overkill.

Dual gt's are a good bet if you plan on keeping the cards for at least a year. But at 1280 resolution, a single gt will run current games no problem. I'd get a single gt now, and then in a few months see how things turn out - you'll have the choice of adding a second gt for less money, or upgrading to a g71/r580. Dual gt's for $600 might seem like a good deal now, but how would you feel in a month if a single r580 was even faster for the same money?

Just get 1 x 7800GTX 256MB

you save money and have a good performer for the price.

In all honesty I would just get 1 x 7800GT for $299 and wait and see if anything better comes along within 30 days, if not then get the 2nd 7800GT for SLi. This way you can use your computer and have it nicely setup within 30 days.

Thanks, I'll go for the GT and then see if I want/need the second GT or if anything else better comes along. Right now I think the GT is the best price/performance card, even in SLI.

i would maybee wait and sell the card on Ebay...get a bit more than you are paying for it. get the gt's if you really want....also ATI might be an option.
