Should I just quit cable service?

My roommate has been out of town and it's her responsibility to pay the cable bill. She didn't and the cable was recently shut off. I've been making do by using my HDTV's digital tuner to pull the DTV feeds from the cable line (all locals in HDTV, tbs, weather channel, etc.) and thought that I could just not pay the $150 a month on cable and torrent whatever other shows i need to see (or itunes, if only there was a set top box player already).

How feasable is this? Don't squeel but there are about a dozen open wi-fi spots in my building so my email checking /forum posting hasn't been interupted either.. $150 a month sure can buy lots of jelly beans..and i like jelly beans..

I pay $15/month right now which will go up to $60/month on the 1st of the year. This is for several hundred channels, HBO, Showtime, etc. etc. All the HD channels. You're getting ripped a new one.

It *is* insane.. My bill was $99n brooklyn (cablevision), now time warner is charging a bit more than $150 for:
-2 boxes (one hdtv dvr)
-hbo, showtime, movie channel and cinemax (wanted hbo and showtime, the other 2 were only $12 more for both)
-cable modem

It's a lot of dough.

Why would you rent a cable modem?

My parents pay $95/month for Cablevision's "Family Cable" (~60-80 analog channels) and 10-15/1.5 cable internet.

If you're tight on money, why are you ordering premium channels...?

if you call to cancel, they will automatically offer to lower the bill if you tell them the cost is the reason for cancelling

Does that include internet? If so, who's your provider?

I will not squeal about you surfing ATOT on open wifi, but if you're downloading TV torrents then you're kind of a dick.

As others have said, just call up and mention that you are thinking of canceling because you can't afford it, and they will jump all over giving you whatever discount they have going.

We pay $130 a month for Comcast and we get no movie channels.
We get internet, HD-DVR and regular cable. Those asshats make you get digital cable if you get the HD-DVR so that adds $15 a month to our bill.

I think he means because you're stealing someone elses bandwidth by dowloading torrents. Why should your neighbors have to deal with slow internet because you want to be a jackass?
