Should I just give up on Norton?

I've been using Norton for a couple years now. I have legit store bought copies and pay for all the good stuff, but for some reason I just don't think it's doing it's job anymore. I'm not the usual home desktop user, so I'm not sure whether I should even be usin git. I check the network connections sometimes and there are so many packets comming in and out I wonder if norton is even blocking anything. I have been running sygate personall firewall(free) on my laptop, and it just flat out blocks everything. I check the packets going in and out on that and it's not even 1/4 of what's going through my desktop.

Also, I don't have any viruses on my desktop or anything. I always keep it clean, run virus scans every night. Not spyway malware or anything like that either. It's just when using Norton traffic doesn't seem to be going through any kinda of bottleneck(if that makes sense).
I would almost prefer windows firewall sometimes. Does anyone have a better suggestion of what to use? I am probably going to keep Norton Anti-Virus however, it is the only utility i've used that has guaranteed me protection from viruses. No problems with it. The firewall though, somethings gotta change.

Thanks a lot!

Norton is a pig. And not a very good pig at that. Mcafee is better but is also a hog when it comes to resources. If you are willing to pay a yearly fee, I would suggest NOD32 or Kaspersky. Both are much lighter and better than norton.

I used to use Norton for years, but finally got fed up with all of the trojans it let run amok on my systems. Installed KAV about two years ago and have never looked back.

I still use Norton AV 2003 ...I scan what I download and keep up with the definitions ...no t actively running. I'm behind a router and Zone Alarm Pro and I re-image my fresh install regularly.

I still like it the best for the way I use it.

My roommate runs NAV and every now and then he'll pick up a virus somehow. I've been running McAfee for years and have yet to get a single virus. Drop NAV, get McAfee.

Just run down through this list:

free online virus scanners

If you find anything, then Symantec is not doing it's job or you do not have it configured properly.

If it's all clean, then run Spybot Search and Destroy and Lavasoft Ad-Aware to check for malware that antiviruses don't typically pick up.

+1 for this
I recently had a look at Norton 2005 on one of my friend's PC. It's way too frustrating than the previous versions of Norton AV. Moreover its true that Norton eats up more PC resources than other antivirus products.
