should I join?

I will be building an athlon 1ghz in the not too distant future(I hope.. damn the wait for a decent kt133a is killing me) and I was wondering if I should team anandtech for RC5 for Seti or something.. although I don't know much about RC5 I do know a little about seti.. Hype it up for me guys and tell me what its all about..

The choice is yours,but either team would by happy to have you 🙂

Check the links in my sig for Seti info and stats.

I can't believe I beat Russ here 🙂

So your an AMD fan huh?

I bet my Intel herd will beat your AMD herd!

Sucker! ha ha ha

</instigating mode off>

he he j/k, you should join though, its a lot of fun and it will give those CPU's of yours something to do all day.

I'm not sure which project would be best for your system. Both would benefit, that's certain. I say read a little about both and decide which you like more. If you have any questions just post them here and I'm sure someone will help.

Welcome to the team!

Rob

This Team is a great group of people and all of the projects we're in could use a boost, so come on in! 🙂

That KT133A stuff sounds really interesting to me too, I hope I can afford something in the 1GHz+ area this year. Even KT133 performs well, I get very good times on SETI WU's considering I only have a Duron.

HeHe. You got lucky, I was in the middle of re-configuring my inside pproxy.🙂

HEY! Wait a minute! Maybe I have a life! Nah.😀

If you leave your computer on 24x7 (why wouldn't you?)... You can put all those idle times to use cracking the RC5 code. It sort of justifies the expensive computer system you just built. At least that is the way I think about it.
A chance to win $1000... An opportunity to be part of the cool teamanandtech...
The RC5 client software is totally unobtrusive... you can have a cow in your taskbar or you can run it in hide mode... It is by default set to only run when your computers idle, so when you start using that game or software you won't even see any performance loss. You'll get addicted to the stats...

Plus, TA needs your help to fend off the DPC! They are gaining on us and we need your help to stay #1.

A little explanation:
RC5 is a brute force attempt to crack a 64bit encryption using the combined distributed computing power of thousands of computers. This method worked on the 56bit encryption challenge. We are checking all the possible keys. Approximately 40% of the possible keys have been checked so far.

Don't let your processor get bored, help crack the code 🙂

TeamAnandtech wants YOU!

More precisely we want YOUR CPU!

<BORG>
Resistance is futile. Your technological distinctiveness will adapt to service us. Your CPU cycles will be added to our own.
</BORG>

Seriously though I am having a blast. I broke the top 25 for the week, and I've been adding as many machines as I can to the cause. Hmm...shoulda been more organized about it though. I look around my office and there are motherboards wired to powersupplies and hubs..lotsa blinky lights...oh well. As long as I keep the door closed my wife will never know 😉

She hasn't asked about the little cow in her status bar yet. Probably cause I gave her an iPaq to play solitaire and tetris on.

Ah, Heaven.🙂

We'd love to have you in either project. I have machines doing both now but Seti is my primary project. I have to be honest though clock for clock the Coppermine is faster than anything AMD has at seti. While AMD chips are faster at Rc5 clock for clock.😀

Some people will tell you to run both. Have seti run as a screensaver only & let Rc5 take over when you're using the computer. I don't think this is a very good solution though. I've played around with both projects on the same machine & have found that even when i'm surfing the net & playing Mp3's seti still gets over 90% of my cpu cycles without any noticible slow down, but if i try the same thing with Rc5 it only gets around 20% of the cycles. It looks to me that if seti run while you used the computer & got over 90% of the cycles & Rc5 run while you were not using the computer it could get over 90% that this would be more effecient.🙂

Hi AMD4ME2

Choose whichever project you find most interesting ,either way you'll be welcomed🙂.
I run SETI ,mainly 'cos I like the idea of being involved in a real attempt to find Alien signals😎

Well, I joined the team for RC5 because:

A) When I'm not using them my machines just sit here.

B) I Read anandtech.com and the forums, they have an rc5 team, and I figured it'd be a good way to "give back" for all the things I appreciate about this place.

C) Team Anandtech is currently #1, but the #2 team has QUITE a few more members and they're gaining ground quickly, so our "home team" needs as many cpu's as they can get..

Hope this helps you.

Sounds cool guys thanks for the great replies.. do you know if there is a linux version of the software? I will have 2 maybe 3 computers down here.. 2 dogs, and one nice fast one... my firewall runs linux and will probably have very little cpu usage for just providing firewall and routing services, so running SETI or RC5 on there plus on my fast system when im not here seems like a good idea.

There's a client for practically every OS under the sun. Click here for the download page.

Glad to have you aboard,
Nohr.

** Weird Al is a Musical Genius ** AMEN Bother!!!

The wise Sir Can't Remember was the first to join TA's knights, but other illustrious names were soon to follow: Sir Launcelot the Brave; Sir Galahad the Pure; and Sir Wellcky the Not-quite-so-brave-as-Sir-Launcelot who had nearly fought the Dragon of Angnor,who had nearly stood up to the viscious Chicken of Bristol and who had personally wet himself at the Battle of Badon Hill; and the aptly named Sir Not-appearing-in-this-team. Together they formed a band whose names and deeds were to be retold throughout the centuries, the Knights of TA.

I think they Hyped it up enough, so no hype here just hope ya join TA if not please stop by TGB.N. For your gaming pleasure they present: UnrealTournament, Half-Life, Quake III Arena plus many others in the works!! 😀
