Should I install the optional updates on a WIN XP Machine?

I'm doing what is probably the final backup on a WIN XP Machine, mainly because the WIN XP updates won't be around forever and I have an extra machine running XP that I don't wish to upgrade to WIN 7.

Can the optional updates be installed without consequences?

Win XP is running as a functional os for very long. I doubt that few optional Updates are of any real importance.

Thus, I would not take the Risk.

That said, I would backup to an Image file (like Acronis True image) it is very simple (takes 10 minutes) before the last Update.

Update, and then 10 min to save a second final image.

Thanks for the information. That makes sense.

I did use Acronis True Image to copy the info to an extra hard drive which is now resting in a Safe and Secure Facility until I need to reinstall WIN XP on this computer. It was my final backup for WIN XP.

I just wanted to make sure that I could grab whatever was available before those resources vanish.
