Should I go socket 754?

Right now im dekstop pc-less. Im typing this on a laptop and I got my xp2500 mobile in the mail, just need the mobo now. Now im thinking that if I was to sell my ram,2 processors and a mobo I can get roughly $260. With that 260 I could add an extra 125 or so and get a socket 754,mobo and some ram.

Having used plenty of Skt 754 setups and currently having a skt 939 i would definetly say go for it. i have found no advantage over the skt 754 with this setup. I never get a cpu alone I always upgrade mobo and cpu so the upgrade path was not a decision for me just wanted to try the new skt 939 🙂 Not really impressed over he skt 754. however if you can get a good deal on skt 939 go for it. i did and that is why i jumped on it 🙂

For quick comparison, an A64 2800+ kills an AXP 3200 in most everything, so I think you'd notice some difference with an A64 3200 (for a Barton to equal this, it would probably have to be clocked around 2.8 to 3 GHz).

really? I thought it wouldnt make much difference since both have roughly the same cache and fsb. Are there any benchmarks out there?

Keep in mind the vast differences between the K7 and K8 architecture--you're looking at a 1.8 GHz Newcastle performing better than a 2.2 GHz Barton. The biggest jump comes from the on-die memory controller, which connects the CPU directly to the RAM--there's no northbridge to mess with. I'd imagine the IPC is improved as well.

I upgraded from a mobile XP @ 2.4GHz on an NF7-S R2 to a Clawhammer 3400+ on a Soltek NF3-250Gb. All other components are identical. The 3400+ completely demolishes my old mobile XP, even at stock speed. It's not even fair to compare the two. 🙂

I say go for it (s754). The bang for the buck rating on s754 rigs is huge.

btw, is there a big difference between the clawhammer and newcastle core. Maybe they dont exist, but I cant find any 3000 claw coreshnh

newcastle is faster than clawhammer by a bit, and also overclocks better (unless u get the C0 stepping, then they are about even).
