Should i go retail or OEM for a new HDD???

which drive will u be buyin, b??? 😉
i would say buy whatever's cheaper unless you really need the cable and software, cuz with maxtor, all drives carry the same warranty

I usually go with OEM because I am cheap. 🙂 But check out the warranty on the retail version if you worry about that kind of thing.
Edit: NM, I forgot Maxtor OEM drives have the same warranty!

cables are cheap and boot disk can be downloaded off of maxtor's site...so get oem unless retail is close in price...many online retailers still have 3 year warranties with the non-retail box.

now that i look on new egg... i think i am going to go IBM.. the 40 gig 7200... is 115 and Maxtor is 116...

its not the price.. but i think i am going to go for IBM.. i was going to go maxtor but i don't know now...

which is faster?

WHICH IS QUIETER>.... i want quiet! 🙂

OEM since its you buying, LOL. If it were me I'd pay the little extra for the Box, cable, screws and the satisfaction of knowing I bought RETAIL.... 😎

IBM OEM HD's doesn't carry the standard manufacturers warranty!!!!

I've read it on Maximum PC magazine which states that only original IBM HD's carry 3 years warranty. If your OEM IBM HD's die out on you, you have to go to the store where you bought it to get a warranty!

Just an FYI 😉

IBM vs Maxtor...pretty much a tossup in performance...so one should look at reliability and since the 75gxp problems (the line the 60gxp is replacing) and my experience with ibm and maxtor drives I would go Maxtor...

When I bought my case they gave me tons of screws and rails and everything, then my mobo came w/ ata100 cables, so like most ppl then need isn't there for that stuff...

since it is maxtor w/ same warranty the only satisfaction of retail should be the box to ship it in if you need to rma or resell it...otherwise you just paid more for some fancy artwork on a box, one 1.44fd, a 8 dollar or less cable and some screws worth 10 cents...

IBM 40GB 7200RPM #IC35L040AVER07 Deskstar 60GXP Ultra ATA/100 8.5ms Average Seek Time - Drive Only - 3 year manufacturer warranty Fedex Saver Shipping $10.00

The IBM has a nice warranty too.

apple is that at New Egg... becasue if they have the 3 year wty.. i am going IBM.. 🙂

thanks again for the help guys! keep it coming! 🙂

oh yea,, out of everyones personal experience... wahat drive is quieter... my WD...is SOOOOOOOOOOO LOUD.... almost like a SCSI! 😉!

I like the OEM because I've got enough of those stupid cables and screws around. The disk you can download from their website, so I don't need that either. Haven't had problems with their drives either, so I don't need the warranty. The choice of course is up to you!

The IBM 60GXP 40 gig. I read somewhere that the seek time for IBM was 8.5 and the seek time for Maxtor was 8.7. Not to mention, the IBM is cheaper. 🙂

that is the same drive i am getting... probably a week after i get home from Florida... so like 2nd week of July... hopefully it's a quiet one! 🙂 🙂
