yeah obviously, and i don't get that.

why work for 3 years straight without using your vacation days that are given to you for vacation? i think a lot of people who don't really value vacation/traveling have just never experienced it.

but yeah, to each their own. doesn't mean i have to understand it heh.

I'll have plenty of time to vacation when I'm dead :D

I think it boils down to a few factors:

1. People overestimate their importance at work and think the place will fall down without them (this used to be me).
2. People feel guilty taking vacations (this used to be me too).
3. With the economic times the way they are, people are afraid to take vacations and be seen as "slackers." (I never had this opinion).

The key to #1 and #2 are just to get over yourselves (like I did). The key to #3 is to develop highly marketable and transferrable skills so that if management does seem to look down on you for taking regular vacations, you can tell them to get screwed and go somewhere else.

There are also people who follow the mantra of "Slave away until retirement then vacation until you die" which I do not understand. I want to go see the world during the best years of my life, in my prime, not when I'm old.

well if you work for a company that gives you vacation time, but does not allow you to take it because that company will look at you as a slacker, then you probably should be looking for a new job because that company is a pile of shit.

Yeah, that's one I forgot to add to my list. People who skimp and save every dime hoping to retire early or retire well-off are playing a dangerous game IMO. Retirement may never come and if it does, you may be in poor physical shape or have suffered enough financial losses over the years to where you can't do much. I'd rather do things while I'm young so if nothing else, I'll have those memories if I am unable to travel when I retire.

yeah will do for sure. i know a lot about what to expect in belize so i know it's pretty adventurous, and that is what i like on vacations as does my wife. i actually ended up NOT going there because after the research i saw that there aren't really any nice sandy beaches, and the ones that there are, are pretty rocky anyways. and that is the types of places we've typically wanted to go to (aruba, maui, turks and caicos, barbados, bahamas), but once i get my scuba cert and feel more comfortable in the water, the blue hole is on my bucket list!

and yeah, i've never been on vacation alone to any of these exotic places, but if i was single, i would do it in a heartbeat. especially a place like cancun where the party life is insane.

I am glad you brought up the sandy beaches. Do NOT expect any first class beaches like Cancun or Hawaii etc.

This has been the topic of many debates among the locals and foreign NGOs. Yes, with the right money MANY areas can have first class beaches like Cancun. However, many foreign NGOs complain that due to the particular nature of the areas and beach erosion it would not be wise to spend tons of money on beach "face jobs".

You can even rent a small canoe and paddle a short distance to the reef and be in 4 feet of water while you snorkel. Trust me it has been a long standing debate. Please don't let that stop you. I have many friends and family who visited there and that NEVER stopped them from having fun.

Cheers....

if you're into architecture you could plan a day trip to fallingwater.
http://www.fallingwater.org/

maybe check travelzoo for a last minute trip idea
http://www.travelzoo.com/

you can use one of these sites to find a cheap plane ticket somewhere
http://www.theflightdeal.com/
http://www.mightytravels.com/

Flyertalk has a mileage run section on their forum. It's basically flights that are really set up to rack up mileage. They usually have to be a certain # of cents per mile after you take into account points. Sometimes you get a great deal in there. You could try a an inca trail trip but passes might be gone and only rainy season would be available.

This thread is for cheap flights in general. Not taking into account points accumulation.
