I just had a pst meltdown and was thinking (based on my extremely limited knowledge of IMAP) that setting up the mail as IMAP would result in the server comnpany keeping a back-up of all the mail. Is this true?
Doh. Sorry. Yes, the messages will be stored on the server.Originally posted by: Mwilding
that's nice, but not very helpful...![]()

i could have sworn pop3 servers are able to keep a copy of emails as well...but yeah, IMAP can definitely do that, it's sweet![]()

Yes, you are correct. Unless you download to a 'local folders' or 'personal folders' it will keep a copy on the server. However you're pretty likely to hit a mailbox limit at some point....

it keeps a copy regardless... some mail clients will mark it as deleted if you move it to a folder, perhaps that is what you were thinking about. you would still have to expunge to get rid of the message tho.
the mailbox limit is not that big of an issue as long as people get rid of old emails.

they can. it's not synchronized like imap though so it would be kind of a pain to delete them off the server... unless the server automatically deletes old emails to make space for new ones. do they do that?

in OE mail properties > advanced > leave a copy of message on server > remove from server after/when
