Going from LA to Vancouver

I can fly, 350ish roundtrip, 3-5 hours

Or I can take the train, 35ish hours, 125-150ish in cost

How's the train? is it pleasant/fun? Or just 35 hours of hell?

For 35 hours, I'd want a sleeper, and that costs a lot more. I don't sleep well on trains.

For 125 bucks the train ticket will not be a sleeper.
It will be a relatively uncomfortable chair.

Go with the plane.
It will be over quickly.

Hell no.

A 4 hour train ride is fun. A 35 hour one is brutal. And that's assuming you hit your stops on time. My Dad's one and only 8 hour train ride turned out to be a 16 hour endevour. And it's not like they can re-route you to a different train like they can planes.

Back in my day we used to cross the continent in 3 months with indians shooting at us and rivers flooding and killing children and wagon axels breaking and ... git off my lawn!

Plane, unless you are short on cash at the moment... then take the train.

I'd pay extra for a sleeper on the train, and do that if I wasn't in a hurry... I think it would be fun.

1. Fly
2. Drive - very doable in 24 hours
3. Don't go
4. Train - 35 hours?!? Does it have to stop and pick up coal for the locomotive?

The train can be fun, but you need to be a social person. Bring some cards, a hidden flask of your favorite beverage (if you are that type of person), and you are set. Meet a bunch of nice people, have fun, and enjoy the experience. Also, bring a laptop, some headphones, a couple DVDs, and an extension cord if you get bored.

One key to me is how long you get an observation car (windows all over, swivel seats, and movies playing). Camp out there, watch the scenery and talk to everyone you meet. Heck, I usually don't even bother getting a seat, as the observation car lets you sleep there at night.

The meals can be good, but expensive. The sleeper comes with fee meals, so in the end, a sleeper might not cost much more. This is especially true if you just get on and ask if they have an available sleeper. They are bringing it anyways and are often willing to cut you a good deal just to fill it up.

It's a 35 hour trip from LA to Vancouver. Sleeper would cost another 100-200 (I'm going with my GF). Addon the cost of the sleeper car and plane is actually cheaper. Just wanted to know if it would fun enough to warrant the 35 hour trip.

When is the trip? If you book early, the plane ticket could be pretty cheap.

Whatever you do Never, NEVER TAKE A TRAIN FOR THAT LONG.

I took a train to San Fran from Chicago that was billed as "One of the most beautiful train trips in the US" Bull manure I say.

52 uncomfortable hrs.+ 12 or so screaming kids+1 backed up toilet(sweet smell)+very few smoking stops=me wanting to slit my wrists

pansies. theres nothing quite like the adventure of riding a train, and scenery can be amazing. we don't appreciate taking things slow here in the usa enough. longest train ride I was ever on was like 15 hours but I'd do 35. I was on a 13 hour train ride once with standing room only, through the middle of the night, and I'd just been walking for 12 hours straight before - I think that felt like 35 hours, I learned how to sleep standing up against a shaking train window
