My little brother, Sirplayalot, just recently received 3 tentative (1 is still lingering, 2 are for sure) f's, 1 d, and 1 b for his third semester in high school. I recently assisted him financially in building a 1337 computer, consisting of an athlon 64 3500+, a 6800 gt oc, 1 gig ram, etc, etc, etc. I took it from him and brought it to work because all he ever does is sit in front of this thing and play video games (half-life 2, cs source, etc. etc. etc...). He has been arguing with me to give it back. Given the current scenario with his grades and him not doing any studying and failing tests, should I reward him by giving back the pc before i see results on his 4th semester grades??? p.s. - he is going on vacation all summer and will not be able to use the pc until he gets back.

poll.

edit: it turns out the grades are a little bit worse than thought. there are for sure 3 f's, 2 d's and a b. click here for a screenshot of his report card.

hey at least he got a b :D

Let him keep it, at least he is at home and not out causing trouble. He will find something else to do, and trust me it won't be studying.

I think he should have to suffer the consequences of his bad grades. I'm not sure that it is your responsibility to enforce the consequences though. Not giving him back his computer might work in getting him to try harder, but it probably won't. Many kids don't respond to having things taken away. They tend to just get pissed and get even worse. Give him back the computer, and tell him that you hope he makes the right decisions about studying. It's up to him whether or not he wants to do well in school. You can't force him to study and do his homework. Try to help him as much as you can, but don't punish him for being a slacker. Eventually it will hit him.

I agree with others who have said that you are a good big brother. It's sweet that you care so much and I'm sure he appreciates that.

Dont give it back, wait till he improves. If he wants it back really bad right now, he will deffinitely bust his ass to get better grades. I know because my parents did this to me when I was younger.

Work out a deal with him and setup a time/work management system and help him improve. It is a pain, but it may need you to help with the tutoring/encouragement on his work.

My GF has always just make it by with Cs to B+s in school for the last five years (failed 2 years of nursing), but this semester she got A- in all 5 of her classes. We have been living together, and with some encouragement & help from me she actually studies a little bit. I?m surprise that she actually done that well because her lack of study habit is frightening.

Your bro won't do too well in the rat race if he fails core classes. He'll have to retake them in order to graduate, much less attend a university.

Edit: And don't you mean quarter instead of semester?

He wants me to give you his side of the story, which is that he would rather use his own computer than to go to his friends house and use their computer, even though he has a (less powerful) computer to use for homework, email, studying, etc... so that is his side of the story.

I think the little punk should start studying and doing well before he ends up asking me if I'd like fries with my order.

You can do it like this, every A is another good piece of equipment. The ram, the vid card etc etc. So the more A's he gets the more stuff he gets so he can work his way back up to his gaming rig

I want to hear more about the false teeth.
Why do you need to go to Europe to get false teeth.
We don't have good dentist in U.S.

You guys dont understand..its not even about the grades..he LOVES taking stuff away from me, he even admitted it to my cousin WHILE he was taking my PS Two the DAY after i got it while i was at school. He took my ENTIRE PC to work while i was at school JUST because he "needed someting" off of the backup hard drive (something that we have burnt and was sitting on the desk right in front of him as he unpluged my PC). When i got home i called him up and yelled at him for taking the PSTwo and the PC so he decided to keep it at work with him (again..JUST TO PISS ME OFF). He is using my grades as a clean way to just have my PC and watch me get more pissed off as the days go by...oh btw..he took everything i said up there about "my side of the story" and twisted it around. I told him if i ever wanted to play a game or something i would have to go to my friends house but i would much rather stay home and play on my own PC because i know my mom likes to know i am home and safe. I tried the whole outside doing other stuff thing but it ended up in an accident that left me in the hospital for a very long time (broken nose, arm, jaw, 3 teeth gone and split my toung in 3). Again..thats why my mom likes it when im home.

BUT ITS NOT ABOUT THE GRADES! This isnt the first time he took the PC away. Its always my parents have to tell him to give it back. Again..he ADMITTED that he does this just to piss me off..i dont know what sitting here typing stuff is going to do but its time that i start taking stuff from him...(worked last time when he took my PC, i took his directv receiver).

Jeez, both of you are pathetic. Sirplayalot, you need to catch up on your schoolwork, you're in high school now buddy, its not a joke anymore. zayened, you're a loser, don't take your little brother's things because you can, it doesn't make your penis any bigger
