I'm interested in grabbing one but only if I can run Linux on it. I'd like to run XBMC on it actually.

Asking as a person who doesn't have much experience with linux, but wouldn't 16gb storage be kinda limiting with fully featured versions of linux (not embedded)? Wouldn't you vastly prefer 32gb?

if you look at the article knee posted it looks like its really easy to replace things like memory and the ssd (anyone know how much a 63 gb ssd like that would be?). also i think it has an sd slot. you can run ubuntu on 16 gb, but probably not well with 2 gb memory. as that article mentions, it wouldnt be straightforward to install windows though

I'm only interested in this box if it can stream free hulu. I'd buy it as a pure streaming HTPC

Does chrome book have a proper HTPC front end? How about live OTA recoding support?

how good is the 1.4 ghz celeron cpu in this? is it horrendous? how would it compare, to say, a 3 ghz core 2 desktop?

It's the same as in the Acer C720 Chromebook I'm running now.
I play various 720/1080p files downloaded from 'net fine.
I run HD Netflix fine.

If you scour some reviews on the Haswell based Chromebooks, you'll find universal praise for the CPU.

e8400 (the high end core 2 duo with the most cache and 3.0 ghz) scores about 1.75 in cinebench r11.5 multi vs 1.14 for the celeron 2955u. Haswell is a lot faster for the same ghz as core 2 duo, but we are talking double the clock speed for the comparison. Things that prefer faster memory access should be better on the celeron though.

i didnt realize it but anand reviewed this and he says the i3 one is 369? thats sort of a ripoff. and all the review units were "accidentally" stuffed with 4gb to hide janked 2gb performance.

I have the C720 (with same Celeron processor) and it lands somewhere between a 2ghz~2.2ghz Core 2 (at least in web browsing benches).

The 2gb of RAM is not really an issue, since:

1) ChromeOS is pretty light on resource use
2) It uses an SSD

I'm on the C720 right now, and it is reporting 227mb free. That's with 3 tabs open (one of which I'd call reasonably resource-intensive), plus crouton running in the background (xfce) + apps running in there (Skype, Chromium, etc). I mean, 4gb is clearly better than 2gb, but I wouldn't consider it a dealbreaker.
