Should I get RedHat 7.3?

I just acquired a spare machine and I want to make it a linux box. I don't know what flavor to go for? RedHat 7.3 is on top. Maybe debian or slackware. Somebody mentioned something about debian not having rpms? just debs? I'm completely new to linux but I want to learn the hardcore way...not through some gui. Thanks all of ya!

You don't need to use the GUI in any distro. Underneath all that stuff Linux is Linux. The only real differences among them are how easy they are to install and configure and how software gets installed.
The amount of time and patience you've got goes a long way to deciding which distro you should install.
I've always been of the opinion that newbies should start off with an easy install distro like Mandrake and RH. More time spent using Linux raises their knowlege level. Once you're comfortable, move up to another distro like Slack, Debian, or Gentoo.

Starting your 'Linux experience' with RH seems to be a good idea.

It is one of the most well-known and popular istros. Any search on Google for help regarding a particular matter would lead you to RH-centric "help". I sharpened m claws @ Linux using RH 6.2 (seems so long ago!), and am still using RH/Mandrake.

If you DO want to learn Linux the hardcore way, you could try Linux From Scratch. I wouldnt recommend doing it unless you had plenty of time to spare though! (This 'distro' would help you learn what different apps do, and also a few extra things abt system administration and secutiry..)

Good Luck!

Alas! I found these words of wisdom too late....

(According to my GF, I have spent more time trying to install different distros than actually using Linux. Two dead HDDs and a burnt out processor later, I still disagree..... )
