i have 512mb of ram right now running winxp. have a athlon 750 on an abit kt7-raid mobo. since ram is so damn cheap right now and i'm not looking to upgrade my cpu, should i just go ahead and buy a 512 stick to have 1gb of ram? was looking at a stick of infineon high density for $37.00 at componentauthority.com. from the forums this is good ram, and i don't want to buy less than a 512 stick. but my question is, should i even bother with more ram? 1gb is more like bragging rights than what i need since i don't really run anything intensive, hence me not wanting to upgrade the cpu. any suggestions?

Well, it might help in the furture with new programs if you plan on still using your present machine then, and you're right, its so cheap, you may as well!

Um watch your ram. If it EVER goes over 512 (like more than once a day) get more. Otherwise stay at 512. Having unused ram will slow down your system by a few %. Not a big deal, but why spend money to slow yourself down.

Why don't you get another 256 megs of ram, and then get like a 1Ghz or higher cpu? That would be a better upgrade than more ram which you probably won't use.

I agree completely, TunaBoo. So many people ask if they should upgrade ram, but have no clue how much they are currently using. Unless you do unusual work, Yaotl, I doubt you even come close to using your current memory. The typical computer now has about 128 MB...

I have 1 GB, and I use it all. What do you run that needs that much?

okay, tunaboo sold me. i don't think my ram usage has ever gone over 300 at any time. i don't want to buy a new cpu for the simple reason i don't want to have my old one just sitting there since i wouldn't get that much if i sold it. i prefer to add stuff at this point instead of replacing anything.

to hell with it, i can get a 1.2 (266) athlon from tcwo for 93.95 shipped and get the thermalright (take?) sk-6 for 38 shipped. one question though, i've seen in the bios of my mobo that i can get the fsb to like 134/something. would i be able to run this cpu at that fsb or would i have to run it at 1.2 with a 200 fsb?
