SHould i get DDR550 RAM to atain the best OC possible for my new A64 SYSTEM?

I read the article on anand saying that the OCZ EBPC3700RAM gives alot of headroom for Ocing in a A64 System. The effect of higher latency is dimminished since the higher speed of the RAM will provide a faster system compared to tight timings alone.

So if i get the OCZ PC 4400 DDR RAM with my A64 3400 (1MB Cache) will result in a very good OC since I have lots of headroom?

It'll certainly give you headroom for 1:1 overclocking, so if you can afford it I'd say have fun

alright, i am a total nOOB at OCing as i've been using company supplied compaq desktops for years.

So far i know people use one way to OC the A64 is by increasing the FSB.

SO my 3400+ is running at 2.2Ghz stock using a FSB of 10X220 correct? If i want to OC my CPU, i up the FSB, lets say i want a speed of 2.5Ghz, I do 10X250 = 2500. So what is my RAM running at then? I am confused.

what is 1:1 overclocking? RAM speed : FSB ??

3400+=11x200=2200 because the default HTT speed is 200mhz.

1:1 indicates the ram and CPU run the same speed E.G. HTT 200mhz Ram 200mhzx2=400DDR As you increase HTT speed the ram will increase the same amount. By using a divider E.G. HTT 200mhz Ram 166mhzx2=333DDR then you can crank up the HTT speed quite a bit before the ram is even hitting it's default clockspeed of 400DDR again.

Running 1:1 which means synchronous, is better because overall system bandwidth is higher that way, but for those like myself who have 3200DDR that doesn't hit the speeds necessary to obtain high synchronous overclocking speeds, the divider, which means asynchronous mode, lets us run the HTT speed higher while keeping our ram from becoming unstable because it starts off with a lower speed than the HTT does that way. The ram being at 166mhz to start instead of 200mhz means that if you increase the HTT speed from 200 to 220 that the ram only increases 20 mhz as well, still below it's rated speed of 200mhz.

it'll be painful but i can shell out the $$ for the 4400, or is it better if i go with the 4200 or 4000 and i'll get equally good OC?

OCZ is good stuff, I'd definitely give it the :thumbsup: BTW, google search for A64 overclocking guides, because you will find settings like HTT/LDT multiplier and voltage, along with ram&CPU voltage must often be changed to achieve a good overclock as well.

I would say that is up to you. If it's in your budget then yes it's worth it, if however money is tight, I'd say get good, cheap 3200DDR like Buffalo, Kingston value select, Mushkin basic, or Apacer and use a divider.

I really don't see the need for PC4400 because normal DDR400 ram can probably push the CPU to its max potential already anyways.

It's a waste of money but if you have money to burn why not? And there's no such thing as running memory 1:1 on an A64 system.

If it uses Hynix chips, do not get them. Most high speed memory use Hynix chips and they don't work well on an AMD64 platform.

I had 2x512 Mushkin PC4000 (uses Hynix chips) and the highest it would go on my 939 was 228.

I have 2x512 OCZ 3700EB and the highest it'll run in dual channel is 247 @ 2.8V. They should break 250 on a single channel 754.

If you need OCZ advice, I would recommend you to visit their official forums at bleedinedge.com and ask their support team.
