I don't blame you for not wanting to risk your child's health. That's an issue with any pet, which should have given you paws, er pause, before getting a pet.

1. Read up on declawing, and learn that it's wrong.
2. Read up on options, ask a vet, and see if trimming is an alternative.
3. If not, find a better home for the cat.

Then grow a pair, and make sure nothing happens to the cat. Your position is objectively more correct. Who gives a fuck what a doctor thinks? Well shoot having the cat declawed Tuesday, overnight procedure. I told her everything you guys said but she works with doctors and they saw the video of the kid literally pressing his face into the cats fur and all commented that the cat could paw out his eyes. The sage advice of ATOTers could not overcome doctors telling her she should get it done.

How about a workable solution? A simple search reveals that trimming a cat's nails is a normal part of care.

Easy peasy.

That said, you're making a significant mistake and I can only hope that you reconsider.

Your child isn't going to lose an eye. Your child is going to have a small scrape that likely won't even draw blood --but he'll remember. Kids that young remember pain more than they remember words. He may not listen to you but he'll sure as hell learn when he gets smacked with no-claw paws once or twice, or even one gentle swipe with claws. Most of the time, cats don't even respond will full-force in said scenarios. Most of the time, cats will first respond by getting up and moving, then some no-claw smacks, then hissing before claws come out. Trim the claws if necessary.

The worry about losing an eye is so remote it's absurd. Are you going to tie pillows to his face when he goes outside because there's a tiny chance he'll fall forward and hit the ground?

Either get rid of the cat or don't, but don't declaw the animal.

1) Declawing cats is cruel and inhumane. I rescued a declawed cat many years ago, and he suffered from a number of emotional issues from being declawed. Don't do it. No respectable vet would recommend or perform the procedure.

2) I raised my young daughter with 2 cats, both with claws. Yes, she got scratched a couple times, and yes, she still refers to the large polydactyl male as 'ouchy kitty,' but she got through it just fine and without any scars, emotional or physical.
