Should I get an iBook?

I have a friend that can get me a 12" iBook 800Mhz for $1049 with his Apple discount. That's $250 cheaper than retail. That is a REALLY tempting offer because I want a laptop, and I really want to mess around with OSX. I'm seriously considering putting this baby on my credit card today. Someone either talk me out of it, or into it! BTW, I'm a mac virgin, so this would be a really new experience for me, but OSX looks really cool. Plus I have an iPod (mac formatted).

Do it. I want to get one also, but I just don't have the cash.

Well technically I don't have the cash either, considering charging it (just got my interest rate lowered on my CC), that's why this is a big decision! If it was a cash transaction, I'd have it in front of me right now! :D

It is really tempting. I can get the 700mhz one for $849, which is $150 off retail. But that one only has a CD-ROM drive, not a combo drive. And it has 10GB less HD space, and 16mb less video memory. The 800 seems like the best deal to me.

EDIT: Whuoh! My GF just "convinced" me I don't really "need" to charge an iBook (apparently want and need are two different things? who knew). You think it would piss her off if I still bought it?

You may want to look at the 12" powerbook. It is going to be somewhat more expensive, but it has a G4. I have heard G3's are dogs in OSX.

I really want one, but see my edit in the post above. I think it would go over like a lead ballon if I charged it.

I wouldn't charge it. Save enough money so you can pay cash and your gf will be a lot happier about it.

It's win-win then.

Definitely, don't charge it. I'm betting that even your new interest rate is still far too high. Much better of an idea to simply save the money until you can afford it. Hell maybe by then, the new ones will be out? :p

If you just want to try out MacOSX then get a cheap iMac off eBay. Then use the credit card to get a decent PC laptop...Dell refurbs come to mind.

Yes, get one. I have one and I really like it. It's a much more fun OS than windows is. So many cool things you can do with it.

Go for it. You won't regret it.

Even people who are PC zealots will tell you that Apple makes some of the nicest laptops money can buy.

I would agree with what iamwiz82 said about getting the 12" Powerbook. The G4 makes a LOT of difference in running OS X.

If you can't afford the PB, the iBook is still a great laptop. Get the combo drive and you will be all set. :D

Go for it when you have the cash. I wish I had the cash for an iBook, but my $1200 went to an IBM r32 instead. Maybe someday. :D
