Should I get a VW Jetta, Jettalll, or Passat?

In the near future I'm going to need something to replace my hoopdy '86 Hyundai Excel hatchback. I like the Jetta series but them Passats' are bad as hell. A relative of mine just bought the turbo diesel version of the Passat - that thing is MEAN!!! But of course, $$$. Opinions? This would be a second car and doesnt have to be new.

My friend has a 97 golf TDI (yes, diesel), and it's a pretty quick little car!
Doesn't sound much like a diesel at all, nice all around car

My father owns a '99 V6 Passat. He let me drive it for a day last year (had a lot of travelling to do), and it is certainly one mean little car. As far as mid-sized luxury cars go, the Passat is #1.

My college friend has a Jetta. They are pretty nice - somehow, he got it up to 130 MPH on a little road known as George Bush Turnpike =) On top of that, it felt smoother at 130 than my 98 Ford Contour does at like 80.

Go with a Jetta II. You can get them pretty cheap for a nice condition one and a little later down the road you can do an enginge swap to the VR6. Going from 110hp to 178hp without any engine mods. No one would suspect it either which is part of the reason I am going to do it to mine.

My friend had a 95 jetta and that engine could just pick up the car and toss it where you pointed.

The Jetta IIs are lighter and the VR6 can be put in them. I have driven one and it will take a Jetta III with a VR6.

Car lot here had a used GTI with a VR6. Salesman said it went like stink Too bad the wife can't drive stick.

Because a Rialto doesn't have a bumper to mount a Hoop Supremecy. If you can't mount a Hoop Supremecy then how can you carry the bikes in front of your camper???

Friend of mine had a '95 GTI VR6, it was a fast little bastard too. In 4th gear it was as fast as our old '95 maxima was in 3rd (both manuals obviously)...that annoyed me racing him, and the maxima is no slouch!
