Thinking about picking one up used for my kids.

Is this a good choice or should I choose another gaming system?

It's cheap and there's a lot of good games for it. If money is a factor then sure, if not then you could get a newer system

you should pick a next-gen console. ps2 and xbox just had price cuts, and gamecube is 150 with a free game.

Oh, you mean the one that was out a year and a half before on the Dreamcast, and is essentially the same? :p

I love my DC and I love it even more after my friend gave me his binder of backup DC games after he destroyed the original copies. I'm not positive but there are at least 200 CDs in there and I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he manged to collect every DC game:D

Destroyed the originals? Wouldn't that make them illegal?

Oh, and don't get your kids the Dreamcast. Get the Dreamcast for yourself :p

Best system ever next to GameCube and SNES to me.

This one's available in my area. Any idea what the problem with it is and if it's fixable?

Console comes with power and AV cables only. No controller. There is a problem with the unit. It does not want to read games. It will read an burned audio CD fine (and then play it), but if you put in an actual game (GDROM) the unit sits at it's startup screen with the white background and then gives up trying to read the disk and goes to it's bios (what you would get if there wasn't a CD in there). Who knows, maybe it's an easy fix...but I'm not the type who would know what to look for. My loss is your gain!

I'm not really sure what happened, but the orininals got destroyed...that's what backups are for, the only thing that matters is that only one copy of the game exists:)

Buy them a game cube instead, they'll actually be able to get new games for it. The dreamcast is a gamer's collectors thing, not really a kid's console.

My boy loves his gamecube. He's ten. Lots of games for the younger kids. Not sure if they made many for the dc.

Dreamcast is great and certainly cost-effective, but you may start running into trouble finding software available locally (the selection at the local EBs is starting to get slim, and yes, I check pretty frequently). The other potential issue is that the controllers can be pretty hard on people with small hands compared to PSX/N64/Gamecube/XBox S controllers.

Some titles kids should enjoy:

Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future
Crazy Taxi
Chu-Chu Rocket
Toy Commander
Virtua Tennis

It is the same. My daugher is a Sonic Playing Freak. We were gone for a few days and did't bring the DC. We stopped at WM on the way home and she was playing the demo. The graphics were a tad better, the gameplay actually seemed slower on the GC than on the DC.

Get your kid(s) a pair of roller blades or take them canoeing or on a bike ride.

They'll thank you later.
