i wonder why people are freakin out over the gamecube by nintendo. hmm, let's see, mario? nah, it's too gay, metroid? nah, sidescrollers are not to be remaid. zelda? nope, never did like that damn elf. so far from what i've seen, nintendo has been catering towards all the little kiddies out there. i believe that sega, microsoft, and sony should rock the gamecube pretty easily.

and what does nintendo need all that power for? another 3d mario shouldn't require that much power should it?

I had no idea the game was targeted at the homosexual community. Or is it a "happy" game?

Yes, wait for the PS9. You can store the whole system in your pocket and use it when you got nothing to do when sitting in the wash room.

Please don't get a PS2 and just pretend it never existed.
The supply is short, I don't have one yet, and the last thing I need is people with no love and passion for consoles buying up all the PS2s just for playing dvds.

You definitely don't need a memory card to watch DVD movies on a PS2.
That was only necessary in Japan.

PS2....Lucky...I know people who work for Sony :) But they cant get a discount :( For some reason, people never belive that I know someone that works at Sony, but I really do not get why it is so hard to believe. It is really no different than their brother working at Best Buy.

Get a Dreamcast for now. It has better games than the PS2 currently has and it will hold you over until next year. Plus it will save you ~$200. The XBob and Gamecube will be better devices than the PS2 so it's probably worth skipping the PS2 altogether.

Right now the Dreamcast is hard to beat for price, games, and AVAILABILITY! Honestly, I own both a PS2 and a Dreamcast and can't say enough about them both, but for the time being, Dreamcast stil has the advantage.

As for X-Box, it may be the first console I don't want to buy. Why? Because it really looks like it will just be a game PC in a box... if I have the latest nvidia card and high end processor, why buy an X-Box? With X-Box running Intel/Nvidia/DirectX... I cannot possibly see any developer in thier right mind developing a game for X-Box and NOT simultaneously releasing it for the PC. Come on - it wouldn't even be a port!

So for a board like AT where most of us spend a good portion of our $$$ getting the latest greatest PC setup, I'm surprised at the interest in X-box...

I just can't get excited about it.

Optimus: I agree with what you have to say, however with a half billion dollar marketing budget the XBob will have to be the biggest piece of garbage to not sell any units.

You have to understand that the bulk of people in this country are absolute suckers for advertising. So, when they see 100 XBob commercials a day they will automatically become excited about the product.

It worked for the PS2 and the marketing was about 1/100th of what to expect for the Microsoft offering.

It's crappy how people can just buy their way into markets but that's America for ya.

Actually, from what I've heard both Sony and Sega are already spending that much so 0.5 bil is not as big a deal as it sounds. I personally thing Gamecube economically will do the best in the next gen. Even though it may not have the best specs, they have a good set of manufacturing and marketing alliances, along with valuable properties. At least MS understands the need for this, but I don't if Halo and Oddworld would be enough exclusive material.

dwell - Agreed, I have no doubt the X-box will, if the hardware is anywhere near decent and the price is tolerable, be big.
But it bothers me that the X-box will most likely suceed based on 1)Marketing and 2)lazy developers!

Let me elaborate on both:

1) Marketing is necessary. Believe me, I know that. Poor marketing can kill a good product and great marketing can sell garbage. Sony over-hyped the PS2 and it would have blown up big time if there wasn't actually a fine product behind the hoopla.
But there is something unsettling about the sheer weight of M$'s 500 million dollar plan. Something a little too Doctor Evil about it. To me, it rings too close to them effectively buying the market. And lets hope the court problems help keep old-school monopoly behavior out of the console market!

2) In software development, the quick and easy way rarely produces the best products. The PC is the easiest and most known game development platform out there and so we have an enormous number of developers cramming out title after title. For every Half-Life there are 20 "Extreme Mountain Paintball Surfers". But developers love the PC because of the reduced development times. lower cost, and no learning curve for the system. I don't know, but something is unsettling to me about developers flocking to the X-box simply because it is easy. It makes me wonder if the X-box will be able to maintain a high game quality level. And I wonder whether developers will actually bother to push the envelope in game development when many, if not all X-box games will be tied to the simultaneous PC version development... meaning the X-Box will just be one of the middle range PCs you can play a game on. And with its hard-drive, can patches and buggy releases be far behind?

So when I'm sitting in my living room, mouse in one hand, keyboard at the other, staring at my TV as I download the patch for the latest PC/X-box game to run the game at a lower resolution and framerate than the gaming PC in the next room... at what point will I ask why I bothered to buy the X-box? Or will I give up my PC?

Why have both?

Optimus: You're right on the money with your lazy developer comments. Just compare the Dreamcast games written for Windows CE to the ones written for the native OS. Sure, games like Worms 2 are fun, but the quality is nowhere near that of say Soul Calibur or Shenmue. If you think that the CE Dreamcast games are bad just wait for the shoddy XBox offerings that will be out there.

If the XBox catches on we will no doubt be buried with bargin bin XBox games like "Deer Hunter XXII: Revenge of the Rednecks" for the next five years.

If the XBox is a success it's another nail in the coffin for the PC. Right now the PC is good for Web Browsing, Office Apps and games. Get rid of games and it's importance drops 1/3.

Sorry, Dwell, but gamers aren't anywhere NEAR 1/3 of the market in the PC world. More like 1/20th.

Russ: You're right. I guess I am basing it roughly on my usage. I use the PC to do three tasks:

1) Browsing 75%
2) Games 20%
3) Office 5%

Now that I have a Dreamcast my PC usage has dropped about 20%

Anyone hear news about Squaresoft porting their games over to the Xbox? I'll stay with the console that has Final Fantasy.

I heard they announced they will support Xbox, but didn't specifically mention Final Fantasy. They have enough material, they probably could make exclusive series on all the systems they plan to support.

I have heard Square mentioned for all four of the new consoles (if you still consider Dreamcast as new). Haven't heard a word about Final Fantasy on any other platform yet. Maybe they'll bring FF to the PS2 first, then port it to the other consoles a few months later (kind of like their PC strategy). Who knows; I've also heard that Square has had some frustrations in dealing with Sony with regards to the FF series.

you have to realize, most of that $500 million is the loss they are going to take selling the hardware. if theres a loss of $100 on each xbox, thats only 5 million xboxes.

microsoft never loses? what, are you smoking crack? remember win CE versions 1 and 2? the jury is still out on version 3. the first 2 windows were failures. word was a failure on pc for a long time. microsoft was actually a rather crappy little company until 1992 or so when windows 3 caught on. ie 3 was the first popular verions of that (and only because it had the 3 pane email window that netscape ditched for the space-saving 2 pane, but it was familiar so people liked it) so it takes MS 3 tries to get something right. will that happen with consoles too? maybe.

To get an idea about who may be X-Box developers, use this handy guide:

Have they ever made or ported a title to PC? Then they will likely become X-Box developers.

Square ported FFVII and FFVIII to PC, remember...
