Should i get a PC now, or wait until this Dorect X 10 has more affect on the hardware coming out?

Depends on how much you plan to spend. If you are going to spend a lot, then DX10 cards (8800 from nVidia) are out in like a few days, and quad core from Intel should become more widespread in retail channels, but if you are looking at a lower budget then it depends on whether you feel a need for a new PC now, or whether you can wait.

IMHO getting a cpu now is perfect timing. Conroe offered a significant step in performance increase one of the best that we have seen the last years.
You can buy a 8800gtx/gts also , my guess is from what I've heard that R600 might be more powerful but not that much.. And we don't know when it will come with certainty..
It's surely a bad time for ram purchase due to high demand, but you can't have it all.
If I was you I would buy a new system right now, it's one of the best timings you could get imho.
OTOH you can always wait, for K8L or Kentsfiled or new Core duo with higher fsb etc..
But playing the waiting game won't get you anywhere..
And as I said it's almost perfect timing if you ask me to purchase..

I think more importantly... when does the entire line of new DX10 cards come out? Not just the ultra high end offerings like the 8800

The question...
assuming you buy a new video card, ~$200 every two years, are there going to be DX10 games available in a years time?

In a years time the only definitive DX10 only game will be Halo2, purely for marketing reasons by MS. There will probably be a good 5+ games with DX10 enhancements, such as Crysis. They will be developed primarily for DX9 but much like a Gamecube vs Wii, the DX10 will offer an improved and enhanced experience.

Also mind you that DX10 requires Vista, and that alone is $200-$400. Most people however are recommending DX10 cards not exclusively for the DX10 shaders, but mostly to improve ~25-50% in DX9/current games.

wow... they barely even sound worth it...
1) Vista required
2) big power consumption
3) cost
4) cost
5) cost (currently)

So, I think I am hearing people say that it is better to go with a DX9 system now, and maybe wait a couple of years to upgrade to a DX 10? yes? no?

It all depends on what kind of performance you need right now.

The 8800GTX ($650) will offer the best performance *by far* - we're talking 70-90% faster than it's nearest single card competitor. An 8800GTS ($450-$500) will be on par with a 7950GX2($500)/X1950XTX($450).

The 8800s will also have superior AA/AF quality.

Unless you're willing to drop $499+ on a video card, then you should just build a DX9 system now, and upgrade the video in 12-18 months. The X1950 Pro and 7900GT are settling down to be very nice options around $200.

Personally I would hold off on the DX10 cards, unless you have the money and want an uber system. Wait until Vista comes out and it has a chance to work out all the bugs and the cards will come down in price by then.

I would go ahead and feel free to build a system now as there are some great choices to make. Just make sure you think along the lines of upgrades when buying.

Ditto. I plan on using my current X2 3800+ and my 2 7800GT SLI cards for a couple of years at least. Or at least until a game comes out that chokes my system. DX10 and Halo? I couldn't care less. I was not impressed at all with the Halo series. Vista? I'll pass until I have to go Vista, again, only because if a game I like is only available for Vista. I dont see MS abandoning XP for a while yet. And my HW is more than enough right now.

Anytime that there is a Shift in Technology there will be an Associated Learning Curve.

When Direct X 9 First Came out.... The First Generation GeForce Card Was The (NV35) 5900 Ultra..... They ran hot, and were a very advanced card for the time.... but to cool them they required a blower motor from a Vaccum Cleaner.

http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDk2

They were the first Two Slot Vid Card. Noisy and Big.... There were only a very limited production of them....(5000-7000) The actual production Models had the Large Plastic Fan Shroud.

NVIDIA quickly went back to the Drawing Board... And The (NV38) GeForce 5950 was the result....

Same performance... Less Heat

It took NVIDIA three months to revise that Design, and get into hard production.

So I would say that based on History..... Waiting for the Second Generation Cards Will Be The Smart Bet !!

That will also allow time to see Just how Stupid Ballmer is going to try to be...
