my computer is being really mean to me lately.

you can view the details about it in my rig signature.

the processor is over two years old itself. it has already died once. it was fixed by being taken apart and put back together... who knows how long this will last. everything else i bought in august 2000 except for the burner, which was december 2000.

i also keep getting kernel32.dll errors. someone suggested that i download IE6 because that took away their problems, but for me i keep getting those errors. :( i think its reformat time but its bearable for now.

dell keeps on having deals on new comps... i see that i can get a p4 1.5 ghz for 599. not like the 539 deal that i stupidly passed up on... and keeps on tempting me. unfortunately where i work right now it takes me a month and a half to make 600 dollars. :(

or i could wait til christmas and build myself a rig with newegg parts.

what to do?

If you're willing to put in the time and effort, I'd go with building your own computer. Although, Dell's systems are nice if you don't really mind about specific parts.....

u had to "rebuild" ur cpu? geez! yeah i would dump the current pc if it is giving you that big of a headache. buying a dell is not a bad idea. they make good machines, but i am just not a fan of the p4's. personally i would build a machine, just becuz i like to have to choice to put whatever i want in my rig. and i'll take ur v3 if u dun want it no more :D

Honestly, all the parts you have right now sound fine. If you wanted the new computer feeling, just replace the motherboard, CPU, and possibly the RAM (depending on the mobo you get).

Example:

1GHz Athlon 266MHz Bus $80
Epox 8KHA+ $120
Crucial 256MB DDR $35

A simpler upgrade might be a P3 933EB.

Why you want to upgrade? A P3 500 is good. You can upgrade to 1000MHz and you'll be happy as.
Your problem is OS related. Reinstall it.
What do you use your comp for?

i'm just afraid of the cpu failing again.

i don't use my computer for much. seriously when people say "i use it for chat and e-mail and writing papers" i only use it for chat, e-mail, and writing papers. the most extensive thing i do is record shows from my tv card or use my webcam.

i don't have the best of luck with computers. i need one that's practically indestrucible.

and spanky, NO ONE touches my v3. i love my tv. :D

lol, if you have bad experiences with computers, I'd recommend going w/ Dell since their customer service is top notch, and someoen to call when something's going wrong. :)

Get a new CPU. Reinstall everything. Lot's of money saved.

And just wondering, how does a CPU fall apart? And then it got fixed!? How does one go about that?

well the cpu's on price watch was just not worth it to replace the cpu. it didn't really seem worth it.

i have no idea how my cpu broke. over the summer my computer wouldn't boot up but we heard things still spin so we guessed hey maybe its the motherboard. so i rented a board from fry's and discovered that the computer still wouldn't boot up. so it was the cpu as everything else still worked. my brother said that he "took it apart, cleaned it, and put it back together" and them boom it works. *shrug*

What's the price? $155? That'll last you at least another 6 months. By then there'll be Northwood's and Palomino's going cheap. That way you will save in the long run.
And the P4 deal you're looking at, is that with SDR SDRAM?

<< p4 with sdram = pathetic...hahahaa >>

uh oh. *sounds like she's gonna be screwed if she gets that dell config...*

like i had the money anyways.....

i thought replacing my processor would be like 50 bucks. i didn't mind that. i kinda do mind 120...

I've gotta go now, but as Spanky said, P4 with SDR SDRAM is not good. P4's are bandwidth hungry. I'm sure many others here could point you in the direction of a good deal if you feel like a new computer is necessary. IMHO, a P3 933MHz for ~$155(not too sure -RossMAN, where are you? ;)) outlay now will save you $300+ in 6 months and the performance will be similar to a 1.5GHz P4 with SDRAM.

If you want to save money, go AMD. They are cheap, and they ARE reliable. Check out the options.

Catchya.

yes...i'd say go amd. some ppl say they have stability issues with their amd systems, but i put together 3 i nthe past few months for my family members and i. no problems here. 1ghz t-bird is like $100 now. ddr mb is like $120. 256mb ddr is like $35. well...$250 might be a little step for u, since u shy away from the $120 intel cpu. hmm. there is always the celerons :frown:
