Earlier on tonight I got a Gamecube. It's decent. I'm not as impressed with Metroid as I was 2 years ago when I saw it on my friend's Gamecube, but it's fun to play even if the controls aren't as smooth as Halo. I only game for about 1 hour a day so it will do nicely.

I have a XBox and a Gamecube and I prefer the Gamecube.

The XBox sits for weeks just gathering dust, while the Gamecube gets played almost everyday.

I already have a very good DVD player.

lol he's not talking about DVD's. He's talking about modding your xbox to play ALL formats of video, He's talking about Emulation, play NES,MAME,SNES,ATARI etc etc on your xbox.

My Philips DVD player already does play all video formats: DivX, Xvid, you name it.

Real Audio/Video, Quicktime?

The new GameCubes don't have a digital AV out. Any one use this for older systems? How much better do games look? Is there anything that can be done? Did anyone call Nintendo?

I'm just going to say that it has some great games and that was the motivation for me getting one.

girls love playing kiddie games especially games like mario party 4 and 5, bomberman, etc. :)

BTW, is Eternal Darkness an RPG like Final Fantasy style? or more of an rpg like...oh i dunno, Diablo 2? This was perhaps one of the first 10 games released for GC but I never got around to playing it. I could probably get it on ebay for real cheap now so if it's a really good game, I'll buy it.

I say get it. Lots of good games.

Another good game to check out is Viewtiful Joe, former Gamecube exclusive though it is on PS/2 now or soon will be.

And yes, Nintendo did stop including digital video outs as of May as a cost cutting measure. Their justification was that like less than 10% of consumers would need that option. I don't know if you can find old inventory in stores or not.

Wow, damn glad I bought a used Cube that has DO on it.

i have to disagree. i currently own a ps2 and xbox, and i have owned 2 gamecubes before. i ended up selling them both times after realizing that the games sucked. first one i had since release and sold that after not too long. then i got one when mario sunshine came out. boy was that game a disappointment. i kept it for a while and picked up some classic games as well as newer ones.

i thought eternal darkness and monkey ball were WAY over hyped and did not like either of them. the ONLY game that I thought was just outstanding on GC, and i recommen d this to anyone, was Metroid Prime. I would say I had more fun with that game than any other console game in the past 3 years. It was just fantastic. I could not put it down. Zelda was good but I never got around to beating it as I lost interest because sailing from island to island got very repetitive. Resident Evil 1 remake was outstanding as well, I really liked it.

the new RE4 game looks impressive as all hell as well, and i might personally pick up yet another 3rd gamecube when this game comes out :p. I saw MP2 and it looks great, however I just don't have the urge to get it. I mean for $100 for the system however, you can't go wrong. Metroid Prime alone is worth the $100 IMO.

my xbox gets ALOT of play. I use it about every day. I really dont know why nintendo is not supporting online gaming as much as ps2 and xbox. i mean, when i got xbox live, that is when i REALLY started to get the most out of my xbox. xbox live is probably the best investment you can make in console gaming. you just don't know what you are/were missing until you have experienced it. the whole interface is just outstanding, with virtually no lag. and playing fighting games on there is just great, because we all know that 'arcade' modes in games get very repetitive when playing the AI. but not on xbox live.

my suggestion is to get xbox + xbox live. you won't be disappointed.

OK, I called Nintendo. If you buy a system built after May 2004 and you want to use the Digital Out/Progressive Scan, you need to mail your new system back to Nintendo and they will send you back a refurb (+ 1 year warranty applies) with the DO on it. You have to pay for shipping to Nintendo. Then, you have to buy the DO cables directly from them for $29.99 + $5.99 shipping. I didn't find the cables cheaper elsewhere.

So is it worth it?

Eternal Darkness isn't an RPG. It's more of an action/adventure game than anything else.

It's a great game nonetheless and you should be able to pick it up for $20 just about anywhere.

Windwaker >>>>>> ALL GAMES (ok, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration)

But seriously, Zelda makes the system worth it. Then there is Pikmin 2 which also ownz! Mario Tennis is coming up as well and Metroid Prime 2. However, the only reason I bought my gamecube in the summer was because of the next Zelda game (which is not going to be cel-shaded)
