Hi,
My Voodoo3 3500 has gone nutso on me so I need to replace it and am considering these two cards, the Asus Geforce2 MX and Radeon 32MB DDR. I hear that Radeon's are better in game especially in higher resolution but that Asus has much better drivers. They are pretty close in price taking into account the buy.com coupons. Here is my system below..which should I get? I usually play games such as UT, Diablo II, and Q3A. Thanks.

Athlon 700
Asus K7V KX-133
128 mb pc100 ram
Maxtor 20.5 GB Diamondmax Plus 7200
Running Win2k professional

Do the Radeon and Geforce2 MX instantly work just by putting in the AGP slot or would I have to go through a hassle in downloading special drivers and such. In other words, are they pretty much usable right out of the box?

Even though the 32meg ddr radeon is better than a geforce2 mx, its drivers in win2k are pathetic compared to its win98 drivers. All the scores you see the radeon beating the geforce2 mx are in win98, switch to win2k and the mx will slaughter the radeon due to its poor win2k drivers.

And yes you do need to download drivers for it, win98/win2k will only install basic 2d drivers.

Yeah, the Radeon is the better card, but unfortunately the Windows 2000 drivers are piss poor at the moment. ATi's record with drivers and driver releases has not been good in the past, so one can only hope that they release some decent Windows 2000 ones. The MX will be the better card as things stand in Windows 2000, although as I say, potentially, the Radeon is the superior card (IMHO).

The Radeon.
I saw a review recently about the special purpose drivers (like nVidia's unsupported betas all the time) that show the Win2k performance is greatly increased

I don't remember where I saw it....I'll try and find it again for you.

The Radeon also has much better 2D quality than nVidia's typical cards.
(I've heard that Elsa's cards have good 2D quality, but I've only seen Asus and Creative)

I'd say stick with MX until ATI has official drivers that proves them worthy in Win2k.
