You would exchange a GK110 card (384 bit bus with 3GB) for a GK104 with 256bit bus and 4gb??? Even if your GTX 770 had 8 GB it would still be worst than a GTX 780 with 3 GB.

Sell his 770 and 680 2GB while they still have any value before mainstream customer finds out that 2GB of VRAM will become a major limiting factor. He can probably sell both of those cards for $480-500. Then as a temporary solution, he can upgrade to 2x R9 290s that KaRLiToS linked. Those 2 cards will crush a 780Ti and give him 4GB of VRAM; and enough time to wait for 20nm cards.

Once overclocked, a single R9 290 approaches 50% faster than a stock 770 at his resolution. I realize that 770 can also be overclocked but it simply won't scale as well at 1440P due to lack of ROPs, texture fill-rate, and VRAM.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...1-xfx-r9-290-double-dissipation-review-8.html

As much as I loved single 770, then 770 SLI, this makes most sense. If there's any business sense to this hobby, it's selling while the getting's good. 290 CF is quite the "temporary solution."

edit: I'd consider a new case going multi-gpu. LOVE my HAF XB.

I did not say I was going to do it. I said I wish I could have more vram without downgrading my gpu power which is really the only option from nvidia right now. I think there is maybe one 6gb 780 option last I looked.

I find it insane that we need more than 3gb VRAM

are developers doing ANYTHING to optimize assets anymore?

Yes that could be a pretty good option though. Especially that you are downsampling.

As a temp. solution until new cards come out, I'm thinking of selling my 780 and putting one of the 290X's I bought for mining in my gaming rig, seeing as 3gb is not enough for high-res Watch_Dogs. I'm getting stuttering with my 780 at 3440x1440 with Ultra textures.

So with that said I wouldn't a recommend a Ti, paying $700 for a card that might have more cases of its potential hampered by VRAM constraints a few months down the line doesn't seem like a smart move.

Buy a Titan Black and overclock the stuffing out of it. Problem solved. 3GB @ 1600p running out this gen isn't too surprising.

Similar situation. I had a 760 heavily OC (close to stock 770) which ran most games great at 1080p. I bought a second very cheap and downsample many games from 1440p, or use ridiculous AA @ 1080p. I'm extremely impressed with the performance (often faster than a 780ti and visa versa) however, they're 2GB cards. It hasn't really been a problem till now.

Watch Dogs and Wolfenstein may not be worth upgrading for, and the former is currently a mess that will be smoothed out with updates/drivers just as AC4 was, but it's a sign of things coming: GTA V, Witcher 3, Shadow or Mordor, unannounced E3 titles - these will surely demand more than 2GB @ 1440p perhaps even 1080p with max eye candy.

Besides, if your performance is bothering you now, you will not become 'happier' by compromising even further with the increasing demands.

Personally I don't want to play the over priced mid-range game with Nvidia this year. I'm converting my 760s into a 4GB 290 + change towards a second. Used 290 CF is cheaper than a 780Ti here and will easily last me till 2016 which is getting close to Pascal.

Sell your 770 while it's worth something and improve your situation now.

You don't need to run the game at full-blown, highest possible settings. The game still runs fine, just turn down the settings a tad. Just be glad there's even options to make it look nicer. Would you rather they stop improving the graphics? I want to return to the days where the hardware was chasing the software.

One of my 680's died and EVGA sent me a 770 in its place. My other 680 is for sale, but I'm thinking the resale value on that sucker isn't all that much, so instead probably going to keep it in my 2nd gaming PC.

I also don't really like SLI/Xfire, as I've run into compatibility problems in the past.

In that case I would have asked EVGA to replace your second GTX 680 and have your GTX 770 run in SLI.

$1K for a single GPU? Why? If one has to stay NV, I'd rather get 2x 780s 6GB for a little more, or go with R9 290Xs for that $1K. A single Titan Black makes no sense for gaming. 2 of those also make no sense since 295X2 + 290X will rape it from HardOCP's review. NV can easily address this having AIBs release plenty of $499 1Ghz 780 6GB cards. If they are going to do this is another story since their loyal fan base keeps buying NV card with less VRAM or higher prices and similar performance. Some R9 290 4GB are going for $370-400 and 780 3GB is still going for $450-500. Same story every generation it seems. NV has no incentive to lower prices or offer 6GB of VRAM cheaper if people keep purchasing their cards.

It's all about the consoles. 8GB common pool of memory means that games are built with expectation that the GPU can access that much memory.

Anyway, hopefully developers will use all this extra memory to design more complex and intricate worlds, not just the same brown corridors with ultra high-res textures of concrete.

there is no 6gb version of the 780 ti though. lol I might just sell my 780 and get a 770 4 gb. or maybe not...

MSI 780 6GB Gaming card

You got a low price on your card from what I remember you posting so you could e-bay your 780 & pick up this card when it hits NG, NG seems to have good prices on MSI cards at times from what I seen in the past. I think/believe I read a little while back EVGA might be releasing a 780TI and it wouldn't surprise me now if MSI released a 780 Ti 6GB.

yeah but I will end up losing at least 200 bucks selling my 780 just to get another one with 6gb. and it will only help in 2 games that I dont even own yet. I will just wait for killer a deal or maybe some new cards. it will probably be at least 6 months before I pick up Wolfenstein or Watch Dogs anyway.

I wouldn't do it. 780 6GB is $550-570 but provides performance roughly similar to a $400 R9 290. You know the 780 6GB is gross overpriced at the moment. With next generation of cards, 780 will become a mid-range performance level at most likely a $349 price level given where R9 290 sits today. The resale value loss on that 6GB card will be huge since hardly anyone will want it.

Ok got it, I thought you were thinking of making a move soon. I am thinking a MSI GTX 780 6GB at NG might be around $499.00 - $549.00 when they have their sale prices at times on NG. Just so you know the MSI GTX 780 Gaming cards are getting good prices right now used on ebay and since you are into yours for around $380.00 thought it might not be a bad option.

If you can stand going red then a pair of 290's will give you vastly better performance than your 770 at very little more than the price of a 780ti with the added bonus of 4gb ram.

Interesting talk about this vram issue, been thinking i was crazy to consider a 290 as it seems to be a increment upgrade over my 2gb 770 but with what seems to be a new trend of new games pushing even 3gb cards i guess its as good as any other upgrade.

My single 770 suddenly seems like a pos......hell Toyota has the most common sense out of almost anybody here and he is already wanting to move on from him 3gb 780 which blows my mind. Guess games must be pushing vram and cards harder then i even expected.

I know it is just two outliers atm with Watchdogs and Wolfenstein but this feels a whole lot like my previous 580. At the end of its life it still had enough grunt to power what I wanted it to but the 1.5gb of vram was what pushed me over the edge towards an upgrade. Hitting a vram wall in BF4 before I hit a performance wall was sad. I feel for the people who went 580sli and didn't grab the 3gb version.

I agree completely. I would rather have a much more immersive world with great AI and interesting NPCs, destructible environments and good physics, good animation and dialogue, and an interesting and engaging storyline and dialogue than fancy lighting and textures.

Unfortunately the next gen consoles are quite gimped compared to the xbox 360/ps3 and many things I would like to see are quite CPU heavy meaning a no-go.

I like fancy effects don't get me wrong but rarely do they make or break the enjoyment of a game.

which is like less then 5% of the games which has been released. :whiste:

i would love games like that.. however lately i see myself playing more games which are limited to DX9.

Ever so rarely, a game like you describe will come out... but its a very rare occurrence.
