Should i flash my seagate HDD.

Hi,

Just brought a Seagate 500 gb model.

Specifications are


S/N: 9QMA425Q
ST3500320AS
P/N: 9BX154-305
Firmware: SD1A
Data Code: 09293 Site Code: KRATSG
WWN: 5000C50010D3CCE5

Should i upgrade to the new firmware which has been released by seagate for bricking problem.

I have not used this drive till now i.e. still not connected to my pc & formatted it.
If i have to flash then i want to flash it before i transfer my data this HDD.

Any help will be really helpful

Your only other alternative is to start using the drive, waiting around for the day that it stops working.
I wouldn't even need to flip a coin on this one... :roll:
Yes flash the firmware. You have one of the defective Seagate drives.

Remember this little chore, and buy WD next time. :laugh:

 
They have released an updated firmware which is supposed to be safer than the previous one. If you have no data on the drive I can't see the harm but it's probably still a crap shoot.
 
Well, their original firmware update was bricking 500GB models. Dunno if they've released a newer update yet, but they are going to.
 
You just bought the drive, the recall and firmware update is pertinent to older drives that have earlier versions of firmware.

Your drive has SD1A which is one of the newer firmware versions.

You do not need to update the firmware (the update flashes drives to your current firmware btw).
 
Still confused.

I think i should upgrade to this new firmware as the drive was imported from Thailand in Jan09.

This new SD1A firmware should be better than i have on my drive.

Then you already have SD1A right?

 
I have flashed my firmware to the MooseDT-SD1A-2D-8-16-32MB.ISO just to be cautious.
It is working fine.

Yeah I flashed my ST31000340AS drive to the SD1A firmware just now. Drive seems to open much faster now. Before there was a 3 second lag between when I opened the drive and got the directory listing........just my experience.

I think they used different firmware version numbers for different hdd models so it just depends on what drive you have. A few models even got a SD2B. Just get the one they have listed for your drive and don't worry about it.

So no change was made to your drive, your old firmware was SD1A and you flashed it to SD1A.

Basically just wasted your time, and risked bricking your drive for nothing.

Firmware updates should not be taken lightly. If there is NO REASON to do one, do not do one. A power outage or a random crash on your computer can ruin that hardware component. Why risk it?
