Should I feel guilty

for being glad that the idiots who drive too fast in the rain total their cars?

Twice now I've been passed by a large pickup truck only to see them in a solo car wreck about twenty minutes later. The first time I was driving during a monsoon in Arizona and a pickup towing a small trailer went flying by. About 20 minutes later I see him jack knifed along the side of the road up an embankment.

Then, last week on the 101 south of Santa Maria, CA, a large red pickup zooms past me going about 75 while in a moderate rain. The rain itself wasn't horrible, but it's a bad road for weather since there are mud slides, steep twisting curves, and large puddles of water in the road when it rains. Also, only two lanes each way and no street lights. Sure enough, 15-20 minutes later he's in the left lane of the road sideways and rolled up on the passenger side. There were about four other cars stopped so I went on by.

I know I drive pretty cautious, but when I can feel the puddles in the road with my hatchback, I know large vehicles should not be hauling ass.

I guess I'm glad that assholes learn their lesson now in a solo car wreck then take out other cars later on.

I love it.. Especially if they previously drove up on my ass before they passed me. It makes me want to get out of my car so that I can stand, point and laugh at them.

It reminds me of when West Texas completely iced over a few years ago. I had to drive 400 miles across the state. Most people were driving about 20mph, but a few people (especially semi trucks) were going faster. About every 1/4-1/2 mile you would see a flipped semi on the side of the road. Every 1/4 mile there was a car on the side of the road.

I saw about 10-20 burning semi trucks within a few hours. It was absolutely insane.

this happens in places where show/ice is more common as well

last year when we got our first snow up here in upstate NY i saw 17 cars off the road on a 30 mile commute to work, some were totaled some were just off the road stuck in the snow

I figured you northerners would be better drivers. I thought this was a southern phenomenon since we never get ice like that.

The northerners up here only smarten up again after they've gotten about 2 decent snow/ice storms under their belts. These Minnesota summers must be magic - it's almost as though they make people forget how to drive in a few short months!

Scratch that. The winters must be magic too. The first couple heavy rains are always complete chaos around here too. I love splitting lanes on the p-bike while everyone sits in the rain!

Spiderman felt the same way in spiderman part 1 and it lead to his uncle dying.
Awww shit. I knew I should have done the police method of slowing down traffic by swerving back and forth. I even have the woot off lights I could have put on my roof. That would have stopped him.

I used to slightly feel that way until I saw someone almost die and could have taken others with them. On my way back from the Getty Museum the rain was falling fast to the point where I thought someone was going to hydroplane. Sure enough, some idiot speeding in a SUV hydroplanes and flies right off an embankment on the 101 freeway (near Thousand Oaks). I read in the papers the next day that a Cadillac had gone over near the same spot a couple hours earlier than the SUV. Fortunately no one was killed.

In your hatchback......... Lol

It's special moments like that which make life worth living ;^)

I actually kind of did that once. Two guys on crotch rockets were being douches, doing wheelies, zigzagging across the road, hanging off their bikes etc almost colliding with numerous cars, including mine. About 5 minutes later traffic backs up. We finally get up to the accident and one of them had taken a spill. Nothing serious, just some nice road rash and a pretty scraped up bike. I drove by, honked the horn and yelled out the window at how awesome he was. He was crying and his buddy was yelling at me saying how it wasn't funny. He was right, it wasn't funny, it was fucking hilarious.

There is also a time limit on the forgetfulness, usually about 3 weeks in between snowfalls will put people right back in the "oh shit, forgot how to drive in the rain/snow" mentality.

Here in MO no one knows how to drive in snow. Whenever we have a snow storm, I laugh hysterically at the idiots in large SUVs and trucks take turns too fast and hit the street lights. I've seen it happen way too many times. Heck, just down our road, I've seen a truck going about 30mph with no snow tires in 3 inches of snow lose control and plow into two cars just parked on the side. It was like pinball!!!

I slow down to a safe level when the weather is crap. It completely changes the handling of the car!

Koing

My wife was driving in DC once during a flood a few years ago. Everyone was slowly going down the middle of the road, since the water was running down the sides. Some asshole in an expensive car got impatient and tried to pass everyone, and the water picked up his car and carried it away. I would have laughed so hard if I had been there.

I don't have any sympathy, but I think they drive up insurance costs.

Just had a decent snowstorm here, and cars were everywhere. A lot of people just don't slow down very much. They are going so fast that just the slightest turn in the road and they are gone off into the guardrail or ditch.

No idea why they don't make the connection...

My hope is that the insurance costs would only go up for the vehicles that attract the stupid since I doubt I'm going to be buying a large truck/SUV or a sports car in the near future. I'm sure that's not the completely the case, but it's my hope at least.

I'm in a low to the ground car with stability/traction control. I could feel the tires going through puddles of water. Again, I'm just glad they only wrecked their car than taking out half a dozen cars in downtown LA.
