Should I ever use V-sync?

I was playing UT on my Geforce2MX, and I gained about 25fps by disabling it. It didn't look any worse as far as I could tell. Is there any reason why I should use V-sync? What does it do exactly? I've heard that it causes tearing of frames in a lot of games. BTW, what other settings should I be tweaking with to get the best performance in UT?

Yes, Vsync off causes page tearing. It's an ugly effect where a page is only partially drawn when the computer starts drawing another one. It looks like the first page is only half or so complete, and then it "tears off" and another one gets drawn over it.

That might be your only solution, but if you can get 35 fps MIN (so 45-50 average), you should probably enable Vsync.

Yes i play with Vsync off...much better however when i play Tribes 2 the page tearing is extreme and makes the game look really bad...your choice

Yes, if you want reduced mouse sensitivity, reduced FPS and the potential to have your FPS reduced to half your monitor's refresh rate.

My advice is to not use it.

If you have cruddy monitor refresh rates, use v-sync. Otherwise just give it a try and see what you think.

While it is true that your refresh rate on your monitor w/v-sync enabled will be how high your FPS can go, but 60FPS(if refresh rate is 60 which is bare minimum) is enough for any game.

I disagree. I play with it enabled because tearing is not cool on the eyes and I have no FPS/sensitivity issues.
