should i defragment my hard drive after i install my programs, and copy all my movies and stuff? or does it not really matter.

I'd defrag after you install everything. I suppose you could defrag right after formatting, but I doubt there would be any significant fragmentation?

Defrag after installing S/W will not benifit anything unless the installation creates a lot of temp files.

The installations will put writing files out as efficiently as allowed. The defrag happens when files are created then deleted. You may find that only a half dozen OS related files or so will be modified during an installation.

I always do it after I've finished moving/installing a lot of stuff or after I've deleted a lot of stuff .Just seems to make sense to straighten up after a lot of mucking around .

You want to defrag after you've loaded programs. A formatted empty drive will have 0% fragmentation because there is nothing on it but the bootsector and file allocation table. The amount of fragmentation caused by loading programs however, will be very minimal anyway. You wil probably gain back a couple of kb by doing this and that's it. Performance will be virtually unchanged, unless you've got a pentium 75 with 8mb of ram!

don't do either, there's no point. it would be like telling a naked stripper to take her clothes off.

Since I'm usually building a system for a paying customer I disagree, when they look thru the system showing them that
the hd has been scanned and defraged is a standard part of doing business.

Works for me. 🙂

I always throw in a defrag at the END of an intstall.
