i've recently downloaded a avi divx movie but i now want to archive since its just taking space on my HD. when i was looking at nero i saw the option to create a svcd. i figure since i'm using a cd to just burn the avi anyway whether i should bother doing a svcd. i know that svcds can be viewed on standalones...will it be worth my time to encode it? will the quality of movie be any better after being converted from a divx?

No. The quality will likely be worse. And the file will be larger.

So the only benefit you get is the ability to watch it on a standalone. Which can be nice if you have a decent HT setup.

I don't know about SVCD, divx files are usually already low res so I do VCD. Takes about 1:1 on XP1600+

Don't be so sure. A lot of standalone players only play VCD's.
Another thing... You need to convert AVI to VCD compatible mpg
before you burn VCD. :)
