should I consider a ps3

I am in dire need of a blueray player /media player and plugging my lappy* to the hd tube is an inconvenience.

assuming that I used it for light gaming and most for bluray/playon media, how does it stack up to my other options in YOU opinion at this pricepoint (LG/samsun bluray players, a HTPC)

My lappy does not have HDMI port or an optical drive although it could process the video (c2d, intel 4500MHD)

Careful, ps3 died 2x because of a faulty ps3 laser. It wont read blu's but will read anything SD or CD based. It cost me $150 for sony to fix it. It came with a 3 month warranty, then it died again 6 months later. I decided to fix the laser myself for $85....so far so good.

maybe you should consider posting this in the gaming or A/V forum?

but only after you consider updating your other thread, of course.

yeah, a buddy of mine at school got a gig with a repair shop recently fixing some electronics stuff, and said pretty much every ps3 has been a dirty or bad laser...but that most of them have just needed a cleaning or something simple.

I want it to work well😉

ps3 price drop coming in a few days. $299 for an 80GB, new design. might as well pay that extra 100 for peace of mind

agreed.

i'd get it. ripping your own movies into h264/aac->mp4 format looks great. and it already supports divx/xvid->avi and vc1/wmv. but i'd also take a good look @ the ps3 slim for $299. who cares about the hdd size, you either swap it out for the biggest one on the market (500gb -> ~$100) or play files off the network from it.

You should consider switching to PS3 Media Server. It's cleaner, smaller, and way easier to use. I ditched tversity for PS3MS after the tversity failed on me for no reason and have been happy with PS3MS ever since.

IMHO the PS3 is still one of, if not the, best blu-ray players you can get no matter the cost. Especially when you consider how many new features are added and bugs fixed via regular firmware updates.

There IS a console gaming forum, you know. That said, my launch unit is still kicking strong. It gets a ton of use as a Blu-Ray player... I only occasionally play games on it.

Do it.

I have one, it looks great on my plasma screen.

No. $180 for a used 40 GB PS3 is a bad price, considering that new PS3 Slims with 120 GB drives just came out for $299.99.

Now, if it was a used 20/60 GB or an 80 GB with PS2 BC, then I'd say it's a good deal. 😉 But, the 40 GB PS3 was the first of the gimpy PS3s.

Just get a new Slim.
