Should I call Starbucks HQ and complain that they stole 20 bucks from me?

It's my fault that I assumed a cashier could listen to instructions? At what point did I do anything wrong?

If you bothered reading the entire thread, you'll notice that there are some people who side with you (myself being one of them).

Secondly, it's your choice if you want to complain or not. Who cares if some people think it's your fault. You don't need them to agree with you in order to call Sbux HQ and complain.

People who order $4 "coffee" at Starbucks are not really ordering coffee. They are ordering the Starbucks Frappucino drinks or whatever they make.

When I go to Starbucks I order a double espresso and it is always $1.75. $2.25 for a triple if I'm craving caffeine. That is right in line with the 0.80-0.90 euros I was paying for a shot of espresso in Rome.

Yeah, its was less coffee and more fancy hot chocolate with all the fixings.

As someone who rarely carries cash - if I expected to have at least $10 left in my pocket and NEEDED the cash later for something, I would have been extremely irate.

There's no excuse that the manager couldn't have fixed the problem though. That's inexcusable. Of course, the manager was probably the "manager" because he had been there for 3 months. It's hit or miss at restaurants whether or not managers actually possess any competence. At the very least, he should have checked the balance on the card, taken the card, put the card in the register, and reimbursed you; and put a note in with the card explaining the employee's error. Everyone would have been happy.

Lastly, $8 for 2 coffees? What are you, another ATOT millionaire?

Lesson learned, never over complicate things. Give single method of payment at a time.
What lesson? This is extremely common with gift cards. It's the #2 reason stores love gift cards. Come in to spend $20 and hit the register for $32 in sales.

just call corporate and see what they can do. cashier made a mistake and maybe the manager honestly couldn't do anything. It might have been a shift manager and not the actual store manager. They probably can't do much with gift cards except charge/load them.

it's not some secret agenda to screw you over. just relax.

while i think it's total bs they couldn't fix the issue, op was kind of a moron for giving him cash + the gc without knowing how much money was on the gc.

I can completely understand the cashier for messing up. The order process was different and cashiers aren't trained to think. I can also see the system not allowing the cashier to fix the problem since a cashier removing money directly from a gift card could be a loss prevention issue. A true manager should have some override of the system though or at least figure out a workaround that the system would take.
