Should I buy world of warcraft?

Never played online rpg games. Am I going to like this game? What are the monthly fees and are there any "try it free for a month" type of deals?

Finally, am I going to start playing to game only to find out that everybody has already reached some advanced levels and I'm going to get killed all the time?

if you've never played a mmo but enjoy gaming, you'll prolly dig it

killed all the time? probably, so avoid pvp servers?

You get out of the game what you put in. I had never played a MMORPG before - merely because I couldn't justify the time vs the monthly cost. But I had my eye on WoW because of 2 things - I really enjoyed the Warcraft mythos in the previous RTS games and I read that WoW would implement some features like Rest Bonus that would make it possible to still level up and enjoy the game without grinding 10 hours a day (which I can't do). I got a copy for xmas, then bought a second one for my wife 2 weeks later. We love it. We play a few hours in the evenings/night and more on the weekends.

When you buy the game, you sign up for an account and start playing. Unless you cancel the account within 30 days, you will be charged ~$16 for the following month. After that, it's regularly $14.95/month.

There were recently some new servers that went up, so if you were to create a character on them, you'd be "less behind" that you would be on an established server. Almost all servers have several "noobs" running around, so you'll always have equally-leveled people to help you out, etc. Many of them may be alternate characters for more advanced players, however.

You'll never have to worry about getting 'killed all the time" on a PvE server. You can take things at your own pace and play as slow or as fast as you want.

WoW is a good simplistic MMO to warm up on. Be warned though, MMOs can be very addictive.

While I personally got bored with WoW's limited character classes, minimal customization, and simple gameplay, someone who's never played an MMO before will likely enjoy themselves.

You can get to level 30 in fairly "safe" zones, 1-20 you can do almost excusivly in your own territory where you can't be attacked unless you attack them first. 20-30 there's contested zones that are close enough to your own that are relativly safe (enemy faction members may venture in there for quests but they're close enough to reinforcements that there won't be much ganking going on).

After 30 though, you end up venturing into more and more remote contested zones. Ganking is most prevailent in these zones, because you're far enough away from major population centers that you'll be lucky if you get help. What's regarded as the worst zone for ganking is Stranglethorne Vale, I won't even go there if I can help it. Hillsbrad Foothills is probably #2.

Honestly, buy it and try it for a month, you can get to level 20 in a month easily. After that, sell it if you don't like it.

I've never seriously played a MMORPG before, beta tested a few (Earth and Beyond, Motor City Online (lol) and Planetside) and hated them all. WoW is the first one I liked, it really does cater to the casual player with the rest system.

Characters are stored forever after you cancle your account. If this changes, Blizzard has stated they'll notify past players before deleting them.

Anyone can enjoy this well-implemented MMORPG, regardless of past experience with the genre. This is evidenced by the huge number of Everquest expatriates playing, myself included. It's nice not being shafted for once; Blizzard is great in that respect, unlike Sony.

At any rate, try it out. The above quoted price of $14.95 a month is if you pay a month at a time, you can get it down to $12.95 a month if you pay every 3 or 6 months. Compared to $50-$150+ to watch people eat worms and Judge Judey (in 640x480 interlaced, no less), it's a no-brainer.

I played from release, quit the game 3 weeks ago, Lvl 60 for a couple of weeks.

Here's my ¢2 to provide a counter opinion:

Azeroth is void of interesting content and riddled with unfinished crap. End game is very little more than instance farming (farming in general is encouraged to a large degree and in many aspects). The combat system is limited and simplistic in the extreme, most quests are designed to take a long time to complete above all else, the skills and spells are numbingly boring and the pvp system is a barely implemented sham. World of Warcraft is a shell of a mmo with a core gameplay element of repetition.

I honestly feel like I completed the game in 3 months. Everything else I didn't actually do (scholo, molten core) are undoubtedly similar enough to what i've already done to not be worth my time. My desire to play wow disappeared entirely after 2 weeks at 60 and multiple alts in the 20s and 30s (to make sure I was giving the game a chance). From a veteran mmo player's point of view, Blizzard do not deserve monthly payment for what they have provided.

I'll perhaps take another look in 6 months to a year when maybe (big maybe) there will be a game worth playing.

I standby my first post in this thread: it's a good game for mmo beginners.

WoW is just fine for people who don't have a lot of time.
Me, I play maybe 1-2 hours a day or something, if you even it out over the week, and I love it.

Oh and PvP servers are where it's at.

For some strange reason it seems like PvE is far more popular in the US compared to Europe...

I standby my first post in this thread: it's a good game for mmo beginners.

its for beginners huh... then how come Afterlife, Conquest, Fires of Heaven etc all from EQ are still playing it... the top mob in the game has not been killed yet... and no its not Onxyia... Molten Core is like the Planes in EQ1... extremely challeneging and extremely good rewards for the risk...
You obviously never tried MC or Onxyia..... MC is far more challenging than Fear or Hate ever were....

I dunno what games you are playing but every MMO out there comes down to farming the End game to equip your character with the best items that can be had...
in EQ it was the planes and the dragons...
in WoW its Molten Core and Onyxia... with 2 more dragons coming soon and a new L60 dungeon... thats max party size is 5.... they have also retuned and made it so raids can no longer zerg things that anrt ment to be raided... no more dropping to get quests done and now only Upper BRS and MC will allow raids of 15 + members..

pvp.. did you ever once go to the arena.. with your guild do 5 on 5s or even 10 on 10s...
or challenge other guilds alliance and or Horde to a best of the best comptition?

yes city PVP is laggy becasue the server stops sending packets.. but small pvp is alot of fun and requires alot of skill... we are still discovering new tactics... our best PVPers arnt even rogues anymore... the top dueler is actually a warrior right now... he can beat any other class... scary but true... crit warrior with the best gear = a rogue in plate.... hits peeps for over 2k regularly...

My point is.. EQ2 EQ1 AC AO etc.. are all the same... farm over and over and over..... the same places... the differnece is WoW is changing that... Battlegrounds beign pushed soon .. as well as many other high level content... and hero levels all in the making....

if you remeber back to EQ days.. at 3 months in... we were all 50 sitting in fear farming our asses off for 5 -7 days at a time... farming 8 hour repops even...

pretty much the same here except you cant zerg MC with 100 peeps like we could fear...

if there is enough content to hold the uber guilds that dominated EQ busy in WoW.... you must be doing something seriously wrong to say its a beginners game on any level....

I didn't get quite as high as you but I'm in general agreement. Spells/abilities tend to repeat beyond early levels (just get stronger) and the combat system doesn't hold your interest like EQ 2 (I like WoW better than EQ 2 but I like EQ 2's combat system). No challenge at all getting gear for my level.....what I didn't gain in instance looting I could buy in the AH....I got up to 70g and couldn't find enough ways to spend it. Will be interested in the expansion but I might shut down my MMORPG days for good if this is all we'll be seeing. Perhaps EQ 2 will have more promise.....only 2 cities right now and lotsa complaints about group experience loss and auctioning that they can be fixing.

I've been 60 on my mage for about a month and still have alot of fun.

Hell roll and alt and level it to 60 while you wait for the pvp changes. I got a Rogue to 43 in just a couple weeks and its not hard at all to max out.

BTW if you've not been on a 40 person raid through MC then you havent even gotten close to the end game, that sh1t is brutal but the items are godly, I drool for the Arcanist's epic set.

Highly doubtful :)

To clarify, my comments on WoW were not intended to imply I favour EQ2.

Oh, and i stand by what i said about world of warcraft.

Looking for? hm, that's the question isn't it. I know i don't want farming. I want '97 UO back. But, since that's not going to happen, I want a game with the best aspects of that plus a whole crap load more and without farming. I want a fundamentally different mmo, one that focuses on keeping the customers paying by providing a fun, exciting and vibrant world without needing to resort to excessive repetition such as farming and the other issues i've mentioned.

I'm patient :)

Perfect reply.

I just recently quit Lineage 2 which I'd been playing right since the start of the beta's and it practically killed my life.

Thankfully I pulled up the will power to quit and get back to regular life :) :p
