should i get a Behringer MX802A Eurorack mixer and the Gemini amp/speaker combo? I'm thinking it may be usefull.....i mean i'm in a small band, and this would be useful for practice as well as playing(we're the church band, so we play in the social hall).....and for anything else i woul dneed it for.......this is considering about a $300 budget, so it looks fairly good to me, what do you guys think?

No offense, but I wouldn't trust something with great mixer in quotation marks. That's just me.

That amp and speaker set shouldn't be too bad.

Those Behringer mixers are about the least expenisve mixers you can find on the market. Needless to say you get what you pay for. I have the 602a and I would NOT use it for what you want to use it for, the mic pre's are unsatisfactory...everything else though is fine. That is why I use it as a headphone amp. :D

what is so bad about the mic-pre's? they're supposedly fairly good, from the reviews........this is my first time buying an amp, what would you suggest?

they are going to sound like mic-pre's from a $80 console

you might want to look around your area and see if you can find any used gear that smaller bands are selling to get new stuff

good idea, i'll try hitting a shop tomorrow, but shopping online is so easy, just click and boom it's at your door a few days later.......i've never heard the difference between a $5 console and a $2k console.....so i don't know if thats good, bad or what....i'm not doing any high level recording or anything, it's for practice and the occational preformance, so i don't need EXTREME quality, something i can get by on(heh, i'm a college student, i'm fruagal)

I would invest in mackie's equip. Their preamps are wonderful, plus they're not too expensive. My church has a 24 channel mackie and we have a 32 channel 8 bus mackie.

Pretty sweet stuff.

Let me know if you need more info.

Dude, do not buy gemini for speakers...they are CRAP! Behringer is good quality equipment for a good price. For speakers i suggest you buy something preamped, 1 JBL eon g2 would blow away those geminis...My bro bought a gemini 15 inch speaker a while ago his idea was "how bad could it be", well ill tell you it was pretty bad...when it comes to speakers you cant skip out on cash....i suggest get one good speaker thats preamped rather then 2 crappy speakers + amp.

I played around with the MX802a and it's actually a decent unit. All the knobs feel solid and the preamps are quiet. For $80 you can't beat it. I would look into Behringer's new UB line of mixers, they aren't that much more but I heard the preamps are upgraded. Anyway you don't necessarily need a top-of-the-line mixer for live work, since the sound is in an less-than-ideal environment anyway.

I would also suggest looking at the Behringer Composer Pro. It's an excellent compressor/limiter for the money ($90) and will help playing live, by preventing vocals/guitar/etc. from overloading and causing distortion.

now this is good stuff, i like to see this, good comments! okay, the UB series you say, i'll have a look at that....and yeah i just need an 8-track mixer, not an 8-track(record) 8 tracks seems to be enough.....depends on if i want to mic the drums, but the area we play is fairly small and it's not loud so it caries.....so i don't think that's a need........any other products in my price range? :-D

The only experience i have with boards is on a yamaha O2-R. That's way out of your range I'm sure, so I'll just give you a bump

For vocals I would get a Shure SM-58, $100, a standard in dynamic mics for a long, long time.

And yeah, for $80 the 802a is an alright unit, if you buy few seperate mic pre's you'd be set. :D

okay sounds good, i'll pick up that mixer next chance i get and give it a shot.....preamps may end up being fine, if not i'll get some external ones.......what's the major difference between the sm58 and the pg48?

I have heard the PG48 sounds fairly close to the SM58. If you are on a tight budget it will work. I think the reason why the PG series isn't recommended much is because in the eyes of studio snobs, $100 for an SM58 is considered "cheap" anyways, so they laugh at cheaper. I'd also look into the SM57 for $80, it's basically the same mic as the SM58 without the ball pop filter at the end. This makes it less desirable for vocals, but all-around, it's actually a more useful mic than 58. The SM57 is pretty much the standard for mic'ing guitar amps and snare drums, and a lot of famous artists have used the 57 to record vocals anyway.

Here's a link to the Behringer UB mixer that is comparable to the MX802A link. You won't need separate preamps for this. If your total budget is $300, these preamps will *not* be the limiting factor in your chain. I'm not too familiar with PA setups but my guess is that it would be.
