Should I buy this Land Rover LR2? (Time critical)

Hi friends,

I hope everyone is doing well. I am located in Houston, TX, zip 77070.

I am seriously considering purchasing an USED LR2 Land Rover from an Auto Nation dealer here in the area. The details are:

Year: 2012
Mileage: 16.545

Carfax 1 owner

There are ~34,000 miles or 36 months remaining on the manufacturer's warranty.

In good condition, no visible dents, damage, etc. Has passed an Auto Nation 125 point inspection (It is being sold an Auto Nation owned dealership)

It has all the features that come standard with the car as well as a HSE package. It is a black on black trim/interior.

Asking price at the dealership is $30,991 plus TTL.

Any idea if this is worth pursuing?

Unless it comes with a warranty, my answer is absolutely no. I realize it's practically brand new, but you're going to be paying to fix problems with that thing.
 
As said unless you can buy a factory warranty that will extend what's left then pass.
European cars on average are not as reliable as American or Asian cars and they generally cost more to keep up. Land rovers are one of the worse of the worse on top of that.

So no do not buy unless you have a lot of extra time to take to the shop and money as well. Remember warranty's generally do not cover wear items and/or maintaince items.

Thank you for you replies, I appreciate them! I think we will steer away from this deal...however...just to be informed, does anyone have very general estimates of how much maintenance would cost on such a vehicle, i.e. maintenance under warranty and maintenance post warranty - assuming normal wear and tear of the car.

If it is hard to give dollar values, is it possible to estimate how much greater the maintenance would be, e.g. 1.5x, 2x, on such a vehicle compared to an American or Japanese car in a similar price point?

In general, Land Rover costs way more than equivalent domestic or Asian vehicle in terms of maintenance or repair. If you are really a Desi Dude, stay away from Land Rovers even though beloved Ratanji now owns the Land Rover company 🙂 As a Desi Dude you are *required* to buy Honda/Toyota and once you reach upper echelon, then move towards Lexux/Acura/BMW/Mercedes vehicles. Leave Jaguars and Rovers to non Desi.

It is very funny that when there is a get together in a house, the makes and models of the cars outside instantly tells me if a Desi family lives in that house.
 
I think Land and Range Rovers are awesome but the truth is they're a money pit. Don't buy one unless you're rolling in the dough. It's not a poor man's car.

Thank you for your replies, much appreciated. I am steering away my fiancee from the Land Rover LR2 being discussed here.

With reference to the warranty on it, it has 3 years or ~35,000 miles remaining on its original factory warranty.

However, she is still keen on considering a compact/mid size SUV, either new or used, in the 20-30k price range preferably, but she has some margin.

Some newer models we have considered include the Subaru Forester 2014, or even 2015? And more recently read about the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport/Non Sport.

Are either of these worth considering? Or any other brands/models?

Its up to you. But if it were me, along with the Forester, I would consider the Honda CRV and the Mazda CX-5.

If you are open to a slightly smaller SUV, the perhaps the Subaru Crosstrek or the Honda HRV that is expected this fall might do...

Mitsubishi is a dying brand, they rate terribly in consumer reports for quality.
 
Buying a used luxury car from a non-brand dealer is almost always a fail. A fake land rover (freelander or whatever they called it) at that.
