Should I buy a regular T-Bird or a Palomino?

I'm looking to buy a new rig within the next few weeks...maybe a little longer depending on how long it takes me to save up the money...is it worth the extra $$$ to buy a palomino if im not going to use an mp system...also, do all of the amd 761 boards support the palomino, or will i have to wait for a newer board to come out???

Desktop Athlon 4's won't be out for a few months, and Palomino's do need a special Circuit for detecting a Palomino instead of a T-Bird. Athlon MP really isn't worth it unless going Dual, on pricewatch 1.2GHz Athlon MP was more expensive than a 1.4GHz T-Bird. Just a word of advice, it's T-bird's galore right now, very cheap take advantage of it.
 
I agree...until mobos have definitive support to fully take advantage of all the features of the palomino I would go tbird...right now the mp is carrying a hefty premium over same mhz tbird...it is showing some slightly better ocing and scores for same mhz, but currently there are many running the 1.4ghz birds up near 1.6ghz, something even most of the 1.2ghz mps will have a hard time reaching...the 1.4mp can be preordered for like 299 or upper 200's at least I think...quite the premium.

Othewise wait a few months and there should be desktop palominos and mobos to fully run them...
 
They are all palominos just rated for different uses...

athlon 4 = mobile version

athlon mp = multi-processor server version

(?) = desktop version...no official name I have heard about yet..
 
Yeah, either buy a regular T-bird now, or wait until full support is available for desktop Palomino. Who knows by then there may be some awesome new chipsets available too.
 
I got a regular T-Bird for now. I'm going to wait until nForce is out before buying a Palomino (if I even do that). By then I'll be able to sell my current board, processor, my sound card(s), RAM, and POSSIBLY (though I doubt it) even my video card for an nForce + palomino setup.
 
are the desktop palominos going to be as expensive as the mp's are at launch? i mean i could get a 1ghz tbird for 90$ or a 1.2 for 104$. but i dont want to wait 3 months and find that the 1.4 palomino is going to be like 250$.
 
I wouldn't mind paying $250-$300 for a 1.53Ghz Athlon 4. Heck, I paid $900 for the Pentium II 400Mhz that I'm currently running back when it was first released. And besides, once the desktop Athlon 4s come out everything else is bound to drop in price.

I'm very tempted to wait this one out...
 
And I almost forgot: isn't the desktop Palomino going to be called the Athlon 4 as well? I thought this was announced already.
 
I wouldn't be suprised for Athlon 4 Desktop to debut at $200-$300, but remember it will be 1.5GHz not 1.2 with Athlon MP. And just to clear up the naming convention

Mobile Athlon 4: Mobile Palomino, Slowest clock speeds of the 3
Athlon MP: Workstation/Server Palomino, slower clock speeds than Desktop but faster than Mobile.
Athlon 4 (Most Likely): Desktop Palomino, highest clock.


And yeah, there is no reason to buy Athlon MP/Palomino right now until Desktop comes out and until certain support in motherboards.
 
well help me out here. id like a new rig. running a classic 800. was looking at a 1.2 or 1.0 and overclocking. would i be better off to wait for the athlon 4 and nforce/sis? i dont want to pay 200-300 for a chip when it comes out 🙁 should i buy what id like now, then keep it for when the prices start to drop? 150$ is around what i'd like to pay for the chip.

I just find it hard to believe, that they will have 2 different names for CPU's that are essentially the same thing.

Pls, dont tell me that a Athlon MP is for MultiProcessor, because all Athlons have had MP support since the Classic one. Its only the chipset (760MP) that enable MP. Case in point, you can run dual T-birds on a 760MP.
 
They're probably just trying to make it easier on the average consumer (i.e. AthlonMP goes with 760MP chipset). Who knows what the guys in marketing are thinking...
 
Bruno, I'd wait if I were you. I have a classic OCed to 900mhz, and that's what I'm doing. The desktop Athlon 4 should be cheaper then the MP currently is when it comes out, and it'll be faster. Not many stores are selling the MP right now, as its meant to be only for dual CPU systems. By the time the desktop version comes out, SiS mobos should be out, and nForce shouldn't be too far away (so we'll know if it's worth it). If you had a 500mhz CPU, I'd tell you to go ahead and buy it now, but 800mhz should be enough to last you a month or two.
 
If you have the buying itch, go ahead and buy. You can save yourself some money if you wait on purchasing the Motherboard and Processor for later. Buy the case, monitor, memory (can it get any lower in price?), keyboard, mouse, hard drive (going SCSI right? 😀), and sound card. This should satisfy the itch for a while at least
