Should I buy a Digital Rebel? *POLL* *PICS*

There are packages on eBay that come with 2 lenses. Not really sure on the details, but might be something to look into.

someone's been playing with Darein's new Rebel

Are you joking?! :Q

I guess that just means DSLR cameras aren't for you. An under 1000$ DSLR is amazing. It's a revolution.

What about the fact that the EOS-10D is 1400$ with no lenses, and it doesen't accept the cheaper EF-S lenses specially made for the Rebel? :Q

It's a good time to want to get into digital photography.

i'm a point and click man myself, and needless to say, I will be buying either Darein's old camera, or ROTC1983's current camera, should he decide to upgrade... 😀

I've had mine for about a month. Performance and image quality is great - everything the reviewers say it is. The included kit lens is no Zeiss but you can make great photos with it, and you'll never find another wide-angle zoom for that camera anywhere near as cheap. Get a 50mm 1.8 and the 75-300mm IS lens and you'll have damn near all the glass you'll ever need.

BUT......the Rebel has a cheap-looking, crappy plastic body that creaks and flexes and generally feels like it'll last about 3 years. I don't think it could survive a single drop from 2 feet. The 10d has many more features and a beautiful magnesium body that feels like you could use it to pound dents out of the family car when you're tired of taking pix. It's a lot more expensive - especially since you have to find a wide-angle zoom for it and you can't use the one that came with your Rebel - it's EF-S and won't fit the 10d.

So I say buy the Rebel and start collecting glass - that's why you got into SLRs anyway - and upgrade when they release a version of the 10d that can use your 18-55 zoom.

I have the 10D, which has the same 6.3MP sensor as the Rebel, and I love it. I've noticed that the Canon SLR prices don't drop significantly after time...sometimes they even go up after the "next big thing" is released (remember the D60 when the 10D came out). I would say you should just get it now rather than wait for the price to drop because it probably won't drop.

the 10d and teh 300d are both great cameras. personally id get teh 10D (actually Nikon 100D) but thats because im qhite a serious photographerthe 300D is perfect for someone that wants to learn and learn fast. its great out of teh box and a not so expensive lens upgrade will make it even better

id go with the Nikon becuase my nikon lenses i currently have will work with it and its just as nice as the 10D

you'll need some lenses and they're far more expensive than the camera, for the most part.

I have the EOS rebel 35mm slr with quite a few lenses. So as soon as the price drops a little on the digital version, I will be all over it.

(Bringing this poll back from the dead...)

So... Has anyone bought one, yet? I'm curious to hear some opinions from a Digital Rebel owner.

I would get a 10D.

If you are going to spend big £££ like that you may as well go for the 10D. You can wait a bit and save the extra couple 100's.

Well, I splurged and bought one today 🙂
Congrats! You can't beat the capability of that camera for anything in the price range. One thing you might want to do however is consider reading up more on the differences between the 300D and the 10D before your return policy is up.

In-Depth review of the 300D w/10D reference

Most photographers who read up and know what they are buying are quite pleased with the D-Rebel (aka 300D). But, many people in those forums mentioned quickly found certain advanced features lacking in the 300D which are standard on the 10D. Entry price into DSLR is what convinced them into a 300D and after a few months of shooting, the serious hobbyists found they really wanted those features the 10D has. Initially, for them price mattered. It didn't take long for them to realize they would rather have spent more for the "Pro" camera.

My intention isn't to dampen your excitement in owning the 300D. I've recommended it to many people who want the lens functionality of a DSLR. They LOVE the 300 though aren't likely to get into it far enough to go after the customizable settings and advanced features or don't want it enough to justify the cost. Another thought is that by the time they're ready for those features, a better - less expensive 10D will be here. The 300D has more capability than most P&S users would ever want to stumble across and the out of camera image quality is superb. It uses the same 6.3MP sensor as the 10D and as a Canon EOS DSLR you have the wide range of Canon EOS lenses to choose from. If you get serious into the hobby then your lens and accessory purchases will quickly outweigh your body purchase. In this respect, you're in good shape regardless - if you ever upgrade to the 10D or newer you can still use your accessories/lenses and maintain your 300D as a backup (or sell it to a fellow AT'er to offset some expense).

**Read up in those forums regarding 300D owners and their likes/dislikes. If their gripes aren't ones you're likely to take interest in, then don't look back. Get shooting and start posting your pics! If what they have to say gives you pause, and you're anywhere near borderline thinking that spending $600.00 more is worth the professional body and custom function - then be careful about voiding your return policy and nail down your issues.

Some nice features the 300D has that I wish my 10D did have are:

1. Wireless remote (optional on 300D, not an accessory option on 10D)
2. Accepts new EF-S mount lens(s) (300D can use the first "Digital" SLR lens Canon's made - 10D cannot).
3. Immediate playback image display (10 shows rough image, then fine image).
4. Less of a hit on the wallet (though, in this respect you really do get what you pay for).

If you find anything in those reviews that piques your interest and you want to know more, post it here and those of us who own the 10D or know a hell of a lot about the Canon gear and photography (*cough* lirion) will share what we know.

Congrats!! and Welcome to the Club! 😀

*EDIT*

Here's a link to the Pros/Cons page I had originally posted here. Something in the copyright regarding needing permission to copy/reprint etc. compelled me to reference the link rather than paste the article. Doh!

And here ya go.

Thanks for the input everyone. As soon as I purchase my case today, I will have some pics up by the weekend. I love the camer.

or grab a used d30... but buy whenever you need it, prices will always go down and there will always be something around the corner.
