Should i buy a dell "2405fpw" now?

or wait for the 2407? A couple of questions

1) If i wait for the 2407 do you guys think it will be feature lacking like the 3007? Seeing that the 2405 has D-Sub,DVI-D,SVideo,Composite,Component, and USB connectors i could connect almost anything to it.

2) Does the dell have a 1:1 ratio setting so if i hook up an svideo(ps2/dvd) that it would play at navtive res and give me black bars. And maybe, does it allow scaleing for example 2:2? so 640->1280, and 480->960 (not sure how this would look but i assume HDTV's do this convert of some kind playing non-navtive res stuff.

3) would you think the 2407 be a better panel", not saying the 2405 isn't great (reviewers seem to love it for the price).

If the general thoughts are that the 2407 will only upgrade to have that HD proection crap then no thanks to waiting as i am sure it will be hacked like everything else. Who's idea was this and how in the world does it help the industry other than selling new monitors !!! GRRR...

Oh yeah one more thing, this monitor with an addition to Opteron 165 ( overclock to 2400-2700) and 2x 1GB of RAM added to the system in sig to hold me over until i finish college (2-2.5 more years) as i am tired of buying stuff here and there i want to go all out without spending 3k lol. 1.5k on all this isn't too bad right 🙂

The System and monitor will be used for CAD/DCC, Photoshop, normal stuff, and when i have time game a little (so i hope that scaling thing works good as i do not think the 7800GT will fight many battle at 1920x1200 and win for games 2006 and greater.)

Thanks,
Chris

1. prolly will have the inputs as it is too small to threathen dells LCD-TV sales
2. not sure
3. at the very least, it will be vista compatible which the 2405 doesnt have

what are you going to use the monitor for? ive done a lot of reading and almost bought one. right now im using NEC FP2141SB (22") and my friend bought a 2405 and honestly it was really, really nice...until you moved the mouse in a game. the computer has a bit of ghosting issues. i was playing battlefield 2 and if you move the mouse left to right somewhat quickly while staring at a vertical building or whatever u can see it chop up i guess. other than that, the monitor is fantastic. but im used to this monitor which actually is one of the best CRTs out there so i dunno, for 850 if you need a new monitor i'd do it

do you know the eta on the 2407?

It sounds like your friend doesn't have vsync enabled.

I don't notice that on my screen, and I don't see any ghosting either.

Right now i am using a Dell 1900FP LCD and a Samsung 997 CRT as dual monitors, so ghosting can not be as bad as either of those. I even believe that my CRT has ghosting seeing it isn't that great of a panel like you 22" NEC CRT (those are nice BTW)

I want to get rid of using dual monitors, the LCD is from work (loaner) so i can give it back to them ( i work at home doing CAD modeling and programming main use of computer) and the CRT i can always give it to my Girl Friend or Sister as they both have 17" CRTs

oh? enabling vsync in the monitor menu? where is it

if he's right then yeah get the lcd screen. even if u can't push the native resolution it still looked amazing at 1600x1200 even 1024x768 it looked good, no distortion or black bars

one more thing i forgot to add and should have well noted... and probally make my mind up.

the 2407 will most like sell around 1200 for a while and no <900 like the 2405 is now...

Thanks guys
So the key is to have VSync enabled for games with LCDs?

You should enable vsync no matter what kind of screen you're running on IMO.

It just seems more noticeable on a nice screen like the 2405. It prevents "texture clipping".

Yeah i usually do, but it isn't right due to one of my CAD programs have issues with it "ON" on my 7800GT. The software is Rhino3D v3, good thing the beta for v4 does not have this issue. But again i believe it is more of Nvidia's felt as my 6800 converted to a Quadro had no problem so i see it as Nvidia stripping too much out of the gamer cards...

But yeah now on topic 🙂

so hmm i think I'll be making some purchases this weekend lol

I'd wait for the 2407 if you plan on watching HD content on the monitor. If not then I wouldn't really care.
The 2405 will display Vista just fine... It just will scale down HD content to 480p.

well the only reason why the 2405fpw is 875 right now is because it has a 20% off coupon. MSRP of the monitor is with 3yr warranty is 1100.00. So i added an extra 100 to be on the safe side.

I dont get tearing either because I have VSync on, I dont see any ghosting at all either ...

I dont mind getting the 60FPS cap since anything higher than that is not noticeable.

I was in the same boat too, trying to decide now or later for the 2405. But I've decided to wait, and I mean wait. "Coventional" LCD's have been out for a while now, and it has come to a very mature stage. However, we're about to see some major advancements in the near future, other than the support for HDTV, I don't think it will be long when incremental features like LED backlights start showing up in near-future models, and of course theres SED's coming too(don't think we'll see it from Dell too soon though).

Bottomline, great stuff is on edge and ready to jump off very soon(end of this year even), so I don't want to invest in anything too expensive just yet. That's just my input though.
