Should I buy a Dell 2005FPW?

Ok so there's so much damn talk about those nice Dell LCDs, and the fact that with the coupons in my cart it would only cost $380.96.

I checked out some reviews, including Anand's, and the 2005FPW seems to be the bomb. Although I still sort of believe that for a hardcore gamer, a CRT is a better choice, but I am no longer a hardcore gamer. I play games maybe a few times a week now. And nothing that I read said that it was bad for games, in fact the scaling feature seemed perfect. I don't think I'd mind having a game at say 1152x864 and have black bars on the sides. And plus like they mentioned for games like UT2k4, HL2, etc (games that I do play right now), playing with a widescreen is actually way better.

I think the LCD will be better on the eyes, better for movies, and much better for coding and content creation.

So in spite of how much I like my 900NF still, I'm thinking of getting the 2005FPW. It seems stupid to replace this perfectly good monitor (it's like 5 years old but PERFECT), but I will probably just give this to my parents if I got the 2005FPW. I'm sure they wouldn't mind a 19" CRT over the crappy 15" they are using now.

So really what I'm looking for is opinions on people who moved from a high-quality, AG CRT (like mine, some of the NECs, as well as older Sonys like the G400) to a LCD and if they were satisfied with the switch.

i did a transfer froma 17" crt, so i don't know the diff from your kind of switching. even if you are a hardcore gamer, lcds are to the point ghosting shouldn't be a problem anymore. 2005fpw is a great choice

I had a 21" FD Trinitron for a few years and once I switched to a quality LCD I never looked back. My LCD has black blacks, no noticable ghosting, and the image quality is stunning to say the least.

Dell has a nice 21 day return policy, so if it turns out that you don't like it feel free to return the monitor.

Nice. Well I think I'll wait another 30 min or so for some replies and more research, but I'm about ready to put in those digits! That thing looks so sweet. Anyone who would walk into my room would look to that big fvcking LCD on top my desk first and be like "WOW!". Plus the fact that it has inputs for hooking up a game console or with a simple adapter I could even watch TV on it (I thought I read this?). I have a crappy 13" TV that I don't even use so it could double as a TV.

I've been using a 1905FP for almost a year now and it's got a 25ms response time. Definitely noticed some ghosting when gaming on it. More so when I got a new video card a month ago. Just bought one of these 2005FPW's cause of the hot deal and the specs on it looks great. 12ms response time! Shouldn't have any ghosting at all. The widescreen is also nice for watching dvd's and I think you can also play Battlefield 2 in widescreen which would be hot! I say go for it, you probably won't find a better deal on one for quite a while.

Coming from a Samsung 900NF I can see you demand perfection. I have a 700NF myself and it's perhaps the best 17" CRT I've ever used. I think the 2005FPW looks really nice, and you'll like it. Definitely not going to be a loss on your part because its an excellent monitor with great response time. Ghosting is unnoticeable for almost all users. You'll be fine.

Well, I have the Samsung 900 and just received the 2005 less than 24 hours ago. My first impressions are positive. I'm keeping the Samsung around in case I change my mind. I'd jump on this deal, though.

Ok I bought the fvcker. It's good to know I could still return it and only be out $25 or so to ship it back. But I don't think that'll be needed. I plan to give the 900NF to my parents anyway.

Make sure you post back when you get it. I may need to get a replacement for my Sony G410 and am looking at the 2005FPW as well.

The 2005FPW is the coolest LCD I have ever seen. I was a little skeptical about going widescreen but I will never look back. I have been MORE than pleased with my purchase of it, and I keep thinking about getting another, but I would have to replace my Video card because I would want both on DVI. *evil grin*

Well, I hope you hit the submit button AFTER the PRICE DROP of $50 that was announced in the Anandtech Forums 1 hour and 30 minutes before you posted that you bought the fvcker!

Looks like it was quite a while :) 3 Minutes after your post it fell $20

I swear it's killing me not buying this, or the 2405... I'm currently using a 21' Dell P1110, which is perfectly wonderful. So why can't I just ignore all this jibber-jabber on the 2005fpw and the 2405?

Yes I got in on the price drop. I was gonna say, last night I applied the same coupons and it came out to be more expensive. So yes I did get it for $359.40 shipped + tax in MI which totals $380.96.

Hawt. They are practically giving away their LCDs.

I will definitely post back or create a new thread with my impressions. My order confirmation said expected ship date of Tuesday, August 2nd, which would be lame, but I checked my bank account online and the money is already gone. I'm guessing it could ship by tomorrow even. I live far north of any major cities though, so I'm guessing mid to end of next week I shall have it.

LOL, I must be your twin from the future.

Back in december I got my 2005fpw for $450 (which was damn good back then). I was using my 900NF which is a sweet CRT. Short story short....I also gave my parents the 900NF to replace their 17" CRT.

I was actually going to run some dual setup...so I could avoid the ghosting (which does exist on the 2005fpw) and play games on my 900NF. But looking at them side by side...the LCD was just much better/sharper/brighter. Saw no reason to keep the 900NF, and I wouldn't if I were you...unless you get back into serious gaming that is.
