Should I buy a cable modem? pros/cons please?

nah, i think something newer or better will come along. it's better just to rent the thing for ~$10/month

If it breaks, you have to buy a new one if you own your own. If it's the cable company's, they will replace it for free.

If you can rent from a cable company, go for it. Buy a router and stretch wires all around the house/room/apt and you'll immediately have internet access for all your computers at no extra cost. The only problem is that the Company may 'accidentally' drop the connection every now and then for 'maintenance' or put too many users in a specific area on one connection pipe thus causing slower-than-advertised-but-still-fast speeds. Overall, I'm satisfied and would never imagine going back to dialup

hmmm. I was considering buying one too, but now that i see what you guys said here, i think maybe not. anyone else have pros/cons ??

i think renting is worth it. mine used to give me trouble and @home kept coming and replacing mine with a brand new model.
