Good quality 250mw 638nm and a 125mw 405nm?

Are these big boy toys just going to get boring after a week?

make your own.

take a beat up DVD drive, pull the laser out of it, add some AA's, (can overvolting an LED make it run brighter?)and some means of collimating the output.

then you have yourself a burning laser.

Is there a way to get them past customs?

They are in the US. A friend has them. They would be considered class IIIb.

Depends. What's the farthest distance they'll burn something?

Both will light matches etc from a 7 feet or so.

I voted no. Setting stuff on fire at 7ft is okay but you can do that with a can of WD40 and a lighter. A laser that could set stuff on fire at 700ft would be worth it.

I don't think I can afford a device that does that.

How much are these?

I looked at some lasers from DX and they said they couldn't ship them to the US. Or maybe it was just MI???

That is the site I was browsing when I noticed the warnings about USA orders being canceled.

wickedlasers.com

Is within the US I think. Feel free to google it yourselves, they have some video demos, but they include women holding the lasers and we wouldn't want to turn this into a babe thread now then would we?

we haven't had one in a while. And I can't post another until late 2010....

Absolutely do NOT buy from wikedlasers.com. Imagine two companies having sex. Bose and monster cables. WL is the offspring. You have been warned.

Now I really want to see those pics!

What are your intentions?

Around here, they used to aim them at pilots eyes over at DFW, until the FBI got involved trying to triangulate the perps. The probably did a search for all green laser deliveries within a certain radius and started doing some background checks. Whomever it was ceased before getting caught.

Now that was funny. 🙂

What is this for? Just to fuck around with?

EDIT: Even if that's the reason, I don't see how it could be entertaining for more than a few minutes.

The source is a Laser Diode (LD) not Light Emitting Diode (LED). LD's will be permanently damaged by over driving even slightly. Once the facets are damaged from excessive optical energy the LD becomes a DLED (Dark LED). Even if the current kept within allowable limits, spikes on the leads from switching on and off can still damage it. The rise time on these devices is so fast that the smallest ESD near them can kill them instantly. The bluray diodes are extremely sensitive. When not connected to a circuit their leads must be shorted together. Just blowing your breath across open leads can irreversibly damage the facets!

This is why a proper driver MUST be used for longevity. Buffer caps are absolutely required.

wicked lasers just gets dvd drives. take out the laser from there, and put it in a casing and device last I read

There's nothing wrong with doing that if it were done correctly, reasonable prices and services which are non existent with this "company".

Think about this. At LPF there are numerous hobbyist/enthusiast type that are mounting diodes in flashlight housings using proper drivers with excellent results. They sell and support them better than most companies do. (that are legit!) At WL they take weak Sony BRD's (5mW pulsed avg) and put in a nice housing and sell for $2000! You can get one from a respected LPF member for $150 or so that puts out 100+mW CW that can light cigarettes, etc.

They are a scam and nothing more. There's plenty of info at LPF about how they started as well as speculation of where they may going.
